Oh. They wanted someone who could look an evil beyond humanity in the eye, and not be changed by it.
Kubo thought of the Moon King's rage, all that furious evil from beyond the stars, ages of unchallenged power battering against his own magic. Back in his own world, where he was stronger, but still -
"I can try."
He stepped forward, sliding his shamimsen cord around to his back.
"My mirror was too sad fight. He vanished when I took his hand."
He'd already known that shadow was there, that resentment that lingered still and occasionally sent him walking away from the house he shared with his grandfather, up the mountain to the cave he'd once shared with his mother. Back before he'd come here, and been miraculously gifted everything he'd ever wanted, his shadow self had still been a small thing. Something to overcome.
Kubo flexed his hands, remembering the blight on the other boy's. He risked his playing in this task.
But people had died. People had been terrorized. And if the risk of someone with a stronger shadow meant the risk of more death, greater terror -
"I faced an evil spirit once before, back in my home. I changed him from a blind evil to a mortal, with a mortal's compassion. I might be right for this."
