Kubo met Dipper's brief look, and if the other boy had held his gaze a little longer, he would have seen a similar moment of realization in Kubo's expression.

It was the word choice, 'innocence.' Kubo would not have called himself innocent in any way, not at this point. Not having seen what he had, and not even with what he'd done.

"I killed some-" he paused, and made his explanation plainer, as it deserved. "I killed my aunt, when she killed my mother and father. Maybe that means I'm not innocent enough to take the spear."

He looked at Nita and Miku, wondering if their own stories had left them with anything that might be called innocence.

"We shouldn't leave it up to chance, or guess, though," he said. "We all had frail shadows, but we all had shadows. Maybe that means none of us are innocent enough for the spear. Isn't there some way we can tell who'd be safest taking the spear, without leaving it up to chance or guessing?"
