Normally, he's the type to babble to fill silences, if he feels things are awkward. But this doesn't feel awkward. This just feels comfy, and with the aurora above them, there's plenty to look at.

Besides, he's gotten better at coming out of his head a little and staying in the moment. At one point, he realized that it helped a lot, when it came to dealing with all the scary and traumatic stuff. Focusing on the good things in between - really, really focusing and feeling them - sort of helps in a weird way. It means the bad things don't feel like the only things that happen.

"It's not like a programming thing. Everything we're doing, all this hero stuff we have to deal with, it's random, senseless, and sometimes stupid. It's not like a video game where if you make the right dialog choices you get the Good Ending instead of the Bad or Standard Ending. It's random and unpredictable and sometimes super weird."

He squeezes her slightly, reassuringly.

"That's scary because it means a lot of things are outside our control. But it's also a good thing, too. That means when things go wrong, it's not always our fault. If we get hurt, we shouldn't blame ourselves or act like we deserved it by making mistakes. And at the end of the day, we're not the ones trying to hurt people and none of these bad things would happen - to us or anyone else - without the bad guys trying to be bad guys."
