There were some things that could, no matter how dire the situation, distract Grif out of his fear. What the Surfer just said was one of them.

"Really?!" he blurted. "And a Grif? You're bringing my fucking mom into this, dude?"

He was in space in another dimension and somebody was already dragging his family.

At least indignation was easier to work around than terror.

"Well fuck you too, asshole!"

Grif charged, rushing the Surfer head on. Despite appearances, this had actually been planned. If he could get the Surfer to react to him first, it might open things up for one of the other three. Of all of them, Grif was the most capable of dodging a strike. He was safest at full throttle.
