After Dipper escaped his horrible encounter with the yellow and watched Sam fly off as a red, he'd gone right to Kid Q, who had immediately put Rich on the task of trying to spot Sam. After the retreat started, that search had only grown more frantic. The yellows were leaving quickly, most of them vorping out instantly, but the reds were taking longer, their withdraw less orderly because of how mindless many of the members were.
It took Rich looking for the helmet. Even when it was the wrong color, it was the most distinct shape to pick out of a crowd.
And he was lucky enough to get him when he was mostly alone. The trail of injured yellows couldn't put up a fight, they were hurt too badly. The greens and other Lanterns were taking care of each other, getting each other out of the fight to get help.
"Sam, don't do this," Rich said softly, holding out his hand slowly. It felt like one of the yellows, with all their teeth and nasty claws, was trying to claw out his heart. "You can't go with them. That's not where you're supposed to be. You're Legion, Sam."
He held up the hand with the Legion ring.
"See? See, you still have one of these. Remember this? You had this ring first."
