FLASHPLOT: Spider-Woman

Who| Gwen Stacy
What| Cable Car Disaster!
Where| Fawcett City
When| Pre-Tinker Tailor
Warnings/Notes| High Altitude Action, Danger, and screaming children.

There was once a man named Jebediah. Chosen by the gods, he became their champion, an avatar of truth and justice protecting his people against the deadly enemies of Man. Over the centuries, he grew old and tired, and evolved beyond a mere champion into a grand Lord of Order, the Wizard Shazam. At one point in his millennia-long life, he ended up on the streets of Fawcett City, powerless and friendless, save for the kind people who took him in. He fell in love with the city and, upon regaining his vast powers, sought out the legendary Ibis the Invincible to weave a spell around Fawcett, protecting it from the growing immorality and urbanization that surrounded it. For decades, the spell held, keeping the values and aesthetics of Fawcett frozen at what the Wizard saw to be the best of the 40s and 50s.

Eventually the spell was broken, of course. Despite this Fawcett City has ever been a charming throwback to the way things used to be, a slice of history. Though the streets are now filled with holo-screens and hovercars, the people of Fawcett pride themselves on maintaining 'classical' structures and attractions, no matter how anachronistic they were.

Take the cable cars, for instance. They were never in Old Fawcett City, they would have cluttered up the skyline too much. However, it seems so much more quaint and old fashioned than a skybus tour, so the city government put them up there so that people could enjoy the thrill of exploring the city from a bird's eye view, all at a blazing ten miles an hour.

Why the following events happened would have to be subject to a thorough investigation. The ride had been a little rockier than most, giving the visiting class at least something to enjoy on the dullest tour they could imagine. However, when the rocking got too violent, and metallic 'twangs' sounded off as wires started to snap under the tension, silence fell in the car before a final jolt suddenly dropped them several feet. For a second, all that could be heard was metal straining. Then, as the tour guide rushed to the front of the car to hammer the emergency call button, panic filled the car.

With a final lurch, the cable snapped, sending everyone inside flying as the power fails, the backup repulsors don't fire, and the swing through the air as the car slides down the cable. Their only saving grace is the building they slam into, sending shards of glass (real glass! One must be authentic, of course.) flying into the streets. There was a blessed moment of silence before the car lurched and the children began to scream again. Less than half of the car was inside the building, and the metal groaned as it slowly started to warp and slide out.

Umbra's nails dug into the cushioned armrests as she watched the situation develop on one of the Legion's monitors. No Science Police were available, of course. When were they ever there when a crisis was developing? She hesitated for just a second, reading through a list of names and powers. In the old days, with the real Legion, she could have called up Vi or Cos without thinking and-no. No time to think of better days.

She jabbed a button and snapped orders in her imperious tone. "Spider Woman! Get to the Threshold Hub immediately. A vehicle has slammed into a building and is in danger of falling to the ground. A gate will put you next to the scene of the accident." There really wasn't time to explain like this. "There are children involved, so take care of it."

---

True to her word, the gate opened up next to the accident. Ten feet away. in mid-air. A pair of office workers inside had grabbed onto the decorative outer rails of the cable car in a vain attempt to keep it from slipping any further, but both lack the weight and power needed to hold it steady. The door was jammed, with the walls it's slammed into blocking it entirely, and the bending metal slowly made it less likely to open without some kind of applied force.

The children clung to their seats or pounded on the windows upon spotting her, crying out for help, while their teacher mouthed words that were probably a prayer of some kind. The tour guide is unconscious and half-hanging out of a shattered window. There won't be any help from him.
