Gods Among Us - Saving the Past [modplot]

Who| Everyone who signed up
What| "Gods Among Us"
Where| The Past
When| After the timeline falls apart
Warnings/Notes|

The shifting timeline finally settles into something...horrible. Legion World is no more. As they make it to the lab, the team finds themselves on Brainiac 3's asteroid base instead, and through the windows, something monstrous can be seen.

It was once Earth. The time travelers that altered the past sold out the planet to extradimensional entities long ago -- and all of history has suffered for it. Hence: Brainiac 3's base existing in place of Legion World. Except it doesn't belong to Brainiac 3 anymore. It was Brainiac 5's inheritance.

Brainiac 5 stares at them all from his throne. Strange cords are affixed to the apparatus on his head as if they're downloading information directly into his brain. Hanging in the room around him are different cities, shrunken and trapped in forcefield bottles. Other oddities float in containment units through his throne room. Without Earth and the influence of its heroes, galactic history has shifted. The Legion never existed, and neither did the UP. That means, without the tempering influence of the UP law, that Colu's mistreatment of the Brainiac line was far more openly brutal. This version of Brainiac 5 never became a hero.

In the windows outside, a battle is ongoing. Tentacled robots attack the strange construct that once was planet Earth. Brainiac doesn't seem to be the only one attacking the devastated planet -- other ships and constructs can be seen. Apparently, this is the last stand for many of the major powers of the altered 31st century.

Brainiac 5 looks at them like they're insects. He stands up and walks towards them, the cords attached to his head apparatus detaching one by one. A pedestal rises and a chamber opens within it, revealing a small metallic orb. He takes it in his hand and presses a button. The orb floats in the air and then suddenly expands into a bubble large enough to hold them all.

When he talks it's with a distant voice, one that sounds utterly soul-less.

"When I received the message from my alternate self, I considered simply keeping you for study."

He walks over to the window, watching the chaos unfold outside, his expression flat.

"How fortunate you are," he says in a voice utterly devoid of anything resembling emotion, "that I'm so very bored."

He waves a hand vaguely at them, over his shoulder.

"The time sphere will take you where and when you need to go. There's a data file on board that explains the alterations to the timestream." A massive ship explodes outside the window. "Do try to make the timeline at least slightly less dull."

After they pile into the time sphere, travel through the time stream is...strange. The timestream is small and massive all at once. There’s no sense of space or scale to it. It’s brilliantly colored, like layers of vibrant paints pushing through one another and dribbling past, streams of reds and greens and yellows streaking by in an instant eternity. It feels as if someone could just open the door of the time bubble and touch a solid barrier, but if they lean in they get the feeling it stretches to a near eternity.

However, if they focused in the reverse of the direction they’re moving, there’s a small dark spot in the farthest distance, where the color all cuts off. Like everything’s ended. It’s best not to focus there.

For such a massive space, it's also exceptionally crowded. They catch glimpses of multiple time travelers as they travel to the past. First, the time bubble almost rear-ends The Flash, and his then-teenage sidekick Kid Flash, as the two speedsters run on Barry's cosmic treadmill. Then it passes by another time bubble; from inside it, the hero Booster Gold and several different incarnations of the Blue Beetle stare out at them quizzically.

They even pass by a past version of the Legion itself. They're all teenagers here, and arguing with each other too fervently to notice the present-day Legionnaires whizzing by. Brainy, sans his white facial inhibitors, floats there bickering with Invisible Kid, gesturing wildly at some kind of metal platform.

Then the bubble gets them where they need to go. The files left for them by Brainiac 5 explain what was changed and what must be fixed. If they're a little barebones clinical, it can perhaps be forgiven, given that the final version of him that sent them back wasn't even a superhero.

"Who are you?" Rich asks, because the guy seems chatty and if they can't see him or even hear the direction he's coming from, there's not much they can do until they can pinpoint where he is. "Why are you doing this?"

"My name is Randall Dowling," says the man. "I have three companions: Kim Suskind, Jacob Greene, and William Leather. We're from an alternate Earth, but our efforts to conquer it and hand it over to an otherdimensional death engine made of merged posthumans failed. So we've moved into this one and we're adjusting history, trying to make ourselves...at home. When we're finished, we'll sequester this world off, and make it an island in the void, the only thing left after Chronoblivion destroys everything."

A slight pause.

"The reason I'm telling you all this is so that you understand that it doesn't matter that I've told you," Dowling continues, his voice still cold and calm but somehow mocking, too. "It doesn't matter if you know our names or who we are or why we're here. We stared into the fires of creation and were changed. We're challengers of the unknown. Optimal humans, explorers, scientist gods."

"So, megalomaniacs," says Rich blithely. "Got it."

"Oh no, Mr. Rider. We're not like the monsters you're used to fighting. That you are fighting right now."

Rich suddenly lets out a choking noise, gritting his teeth together, every muscle tensing as his brain floods his body with adrenaline.

"That post-traumatic stress you've been quietly ignoring has created some wonderful chemical pathways in your brain," says Dowling. "It's seamless, I imagine, the way you're now suddenly back in the war."

Rich slowly turns to Gwen, blue light blazing in his eyes, clearly seeing something else.

"Bugs. Lord, I am so sick of bugs. How many of you do I have to kill before it's over? How many?!"

He lunges for her, his Nova force arm a firebrand, Nova Force cupped in his other hand.

There are a lot of reasons why Nightwing chose the window route. Partly it was element of surprise. Partly it was familiarity.

And partly it was because he knew that Batman would have left the window open in order to get out again quickly.

He just sees Soldier 76 blink out before hitting the glass and he waits a moment for the man using Batman's body to turn away from the window. Once he's done that, Nightwing makes the jump, using the Legion ring and his own momentum to crash hard into Batman, arms going around the other man's waist to get access to the utility belt.

He just needs to find the right pouch.

Oh, it was definitely harder now, without a doubt. Usually it didn't take much to overshadow humans, but right now, it felt like he was trying to fight for control against a powerful ghost, and it took him a second to actually establish control. This wasn't gonna last though, it was only a matter of time before he got kicked out. But that was still time spent not attacking a baby, so Danny would take it.

"Alright, I'm taking this guy as far away from here as I can," 'Danny' said, although hearing his voice come out of Leather's mouth was probably a bit concerning. "You guys get the baby away from here or something. I'll worry about how cool this is later."

And immediately, he began running in the opposite direction. Somewhere further into the fields, away from people.

Pidge's eyes dart every which way in thought as she watches Leather-Danny go. Then she turns to Tenno, nodding for him to get to the baby. Her laptop joggles on her back as she runs.

"OK," she says, talking as fast as she can between breathes, "we can try to run the baby where he needs to go, but, uh, I don't think we know where that is and if we take him too far we may end up somewhere where the Kents won't find him and we'll still be up the creek! Thoughts?"

Even after Dowling disappears and Sam's stopped short, he keeps looking around the alley, trying to figure out where the voice is coming from. It's not doing any good, but it's about the closest he is to doing something, anything, because just standing there is completely not his style.

"Okay, has there ever been anyone who called themself a god and wasn't completely nuts? Because I'm coming up dry -"

And then it goes to hell.

Sam has always been about acting first, thinking later, and this moment is no exception. He blasts straight off again, but this time, for Rich, aiming to knock him off his assault. "This is so not the time for that 'Nam stuff, Dick!"

After upending one last bucket of canary-yellow paint, the thing that was once Jacob Greene checks his GPS and grunts. Unaware that he's about to have anything resembling company, he turns and starts to trudge towards where the fatally wounded Lantern and the man who will someday be the greatest of them all exchange oaths.

He's in no hurry. Why should he be? Hal Jordan will be there for at least another twenty minutes, learning to fly, burying Abin Sur... And if he misses the man here, there's always the few hours he'll spend unconscious after knocking himself out on a billboard a few miles from here.

"Can do!" Whatever has just happened, he's not even going to question it. They've been presented an opportunity and it would behoove all of them to waste it.

The baby is...well he's never really seen a baby before, so this is an entirely new experience for him, but he'll try his best. He hesitates for a moment, looking at the child cooing away as if there's no imminent threat to his life.

"You want me to carry the entire pod, or just the baby?" In his mind it's a legitimate question, "or I can go really fast and try to scout out where we should be dropping him off? Fast is my thing, I just need to know who we're looking for, what they look like."

"You're not going to get it," Barry said, shaking his head. "Whoever this is, they're a professional. They're not going to risk giving up their position unless we're directly threatening their ability to complete the mission. Most likely, we're not going to find out where they are until after they take their shot at Wonder Woman. Which means we need to find a way to stop that bullet before it hits her."

"The good news is, I've been reading up on 31st century techniques. I can set the comms to produce a signal that should make the sniper's Kirlian aura visible if we triangulate around their position."

Locus let out a noise of discontent from the helmet, albeit a short one. "Which is only possible if they take the shot, correct? Otherwise we are left to guess where the most advantageous positions on the field would be."

Not necessarily 'good' news, since the shooter's location would be discovered far too late to make a difference. Locus considers this for a moment, then cocks his head, glancing between the two.

"If I position myself closer to our objective, I could deflect the shot. Provided we can isolate the most likely positions for the shot to come from."

"Don't think so! Guess there's only one way to find out!" Goku immediately flies in Jacob's direction, using his powers to double his strength and surround himself with a telltale red glow.

"Hey, rock guy!" ...Stealth is not a concept that Goku grasps easily. (plus, he finds it unfair if he just punches someone before they're aware that they're in a fight) Since he can't use ki blasts, he'll just go with a good old-fashioned punch to the face. He's not sure how much this guy can take, so he'll start with small boosts and work his way up - no point in exhausting himself if it turns out that there's more to this.

He scowls. But Barry's got more experience with that, so he'll yield to the man there. Jason holds out his omnicomm for the Flash. "We'll have to keep in touch with our flight rings, then. The windows aren't huge, so... Maybe fly up, take a look. I don't know where she'll pop up, but she's supposed to catch this professor as she falls."

He pauses, then glances at Locus. "You can really shoot a bullet out of mid-air? Dude."

Back on track. "Flash, do your science to the omnicomms and set up that whatever aura of yours. I'll take to the sky and try to spot her aura, if I can, before she fires off a shot. If not, it's down to you two to intercept the bullet and track it back. Sound good?" Hopefully he didn't sound ridiculous, a seventeen year old kid snapping off orders to guys ten years his senior. His tone betrays no lack of confidence, however.

The pod probably wouldn't be too heavy for the Tenno. It's a few hundred pounds, but nowhere near impossible. Unfortunately, there's nothing but fields as far as the eye can see, with a little road running through some of them. The road the Kents should be taking.

As Danny runs, there's something of a mental struggle. Leather does not like being controlled and contained like this, and he'd be mouthing all kinds of obscenities if he could. His will is strong, and he's fighting to get free, though he's not there yet.

Then again, with the way that heat inside of him is building up, letting go now could be disasterous. Licks of blue fire catch at his clothes and hair as he goes, trying to batter his way through with pure rage.

Yeah, there was definitely no way Danny was gonna contain this guy for long. Nevermind the fact that Leather was fighting for control with the strength of some of the strongest ghosts he knew, it was more Danny's inability to fully concentrate amidst the struggle that was gonna do him in. He had to stop this guy somehow, he had to do something. But he had nothing other than--

The guy's own body.

"That's it!" He cried out, before a smirk spread across his lips. Danny coming to a full stop, before looking up... and flying up into the air, making some room between Leather and the ground. "You know what? You can have your body back, hothead," Danny said, before finally stopping, and crossing his arms. "But unless you can stop yourself from going splat on the ground, I wouldn't recommend it."

"Uh-" It's a good question on Tenno's part, or at least Pidge has to assume it is. "If you think you can carry it fine, but it'll be a bigger target. And we don't have much time. If some runs out into the open shooting blue fire, the Kents could end up running for their lives in the wrong direction!"

She puts her tongue in he cheek as she sizes up the pod. "Maybe if we call them first and meet them somewhere...I think I might be able to hack into the pod's communication system." She pulls out her laptop and then hesitates a moment.

"...Assuming it has one."

Hopefully Danny's still got Leather under control so she can figure it out...

The kid was secured up nice and tight and Gwen was raring and ready to go!

"Wait, what?"

That... wasn't really how she expected this to turn out.

"Aw come on, not this again." She'd had enough of this back when she and Dipper tried to knock each other senseless.

Gwen quickly and hastily leaped up high, sticking to the side of a building and putting a bit of distance between herself and that world of hurt Rich tried to give her just then.

"Okay, first of all! Spiders don't really count as bugs!"

Right?

"Got it!" Carrying it probably isn't going to be a problem, but the wrench in everything really is figuring out how to actually get the Kents from point A to point B.

He's willing to step back to allow someone with superior hacking knowledge try to play about with the pod, it's technology that's far out of his own area of expertise, but there's still the concern that Leather could possibly throw a wrench in everything.

Looking back up at the sight above them, he tries to weight the pros and cons of attempting to intercept, but flying isn't his forte, unless....

"Hey," he shouts up, hoping Danny can at least partially hear, "drop him to me! I got this!"

Barry fiddles with his comm, simultaneously trying to work out where the the shot would hit. He looks up as Jason's comment reminds him of something.

"I spotted a library about three blocks away while I was running. Tall shelves, large windows...good place for a professor fall off a ladder, and it'd be easy to hit Wonder Woman there. The sniper picked this time and place for a reason. I'm willing to bet that's where they're targeting."

A few more keytaps on the comm, and he's done. "Alright, I'm sending the updated signal frequency to your comms. It should activate right...about...now."

The comms begin to emit the necessary signal, but there's the slightest bit of backwash, revealing their own auras, subdued due to them not being directly in front of the signal. Barry, is, perhaps unsurprisingly, producing sparks of yellow lightning as part of his.

Fuck. Fuck. Grif's heart is in his ears as Dowling rounds on him. There's a tiny voice somewhere in the center of his panic that still thinks it's fucking hysterical, this is Batman. Somehow, something about that helps.

When he sees Nightwing approaching the window, he shifts back along the far wall of the room to keep Dowling's attention here and his back to the window.

"Nah," he says. "But this might."

And then here comes Dick through the window, while he goes for the belt Grif sweeps in to try and take out Dowling's legs.

...well. Diving right in might not have been his own strategy, but hey, he can roll with this. Enthusiasm is good, right? Kyle takes off after Goku the minute he flies away, but when he catches up, he doesn't try to stop him. Goku was definitely the heavy hitter, and he was more like— the support? Sure. Something like that.

"Sorry to interrupt," he says, throwing down a quick construct behind Jacob, a translucent green brick wall, either to prevent him from moving too far away or to add a little extra hurt should Goku hit him hard enough. "But we can't let you go."

Definitely not looking like that, anyway.

The only advantage they have here is that Dowling can't mess with Rich's head and mess with all their perceptions to keep himself invisible. So as he slowly and purposefully walks over to where Bruce is webbed up, they can see him now.

The problem is that Rich is raging like a mad bull, making it hard for them to focus their attention on Dowling. Sam slams into him but instead of letting himself get knocked flat, he rolls with it, using Sam's own momentum to throw him off of him.

At the very least, though, Sam's attack makes it so that the blasts of Nova Force he fires at Gwen are easier to dodge.

"No more! You don't get to hurt anyone else!"

It looks like this won't be easy for Rich to shake. That means they might have to try to stop Dowling while simultaneously fending him off.

Greene lets out something that sounds almost like an enraged gurgle. Clearly, the guy isn't the most articulate or intelligent.

He is, however, massively strong. Goku's punch connects and he slams back into the wall Kyle made, but it barely seems to phase him. As soon as he collects himself, he reaches out and grabs a convenient rock formation, breaks it off like it isn't heavier than a semi, and hurls it at them both.

"Out. Of. My. Way."

Dowling!Bruce tries to elbow Nightwing in the face repeatedly, but the Legionnaires' tactic of aiming high and low proves somewhat effective. It does get Dowling on his knees.

"You won't get in the way of my grand plans. This is our world now."

But being reduced to this desperate position only makes him fight harder. He goes for his utility belt and pulls out a taser, jamming it backwards in the direction of Dick's side. His other hand pulls out little bombs filled with a powerful adhesive foam. These, he tosses at Grif, aiming for his legs.

The pod does indeed have one. The only problem? Even in the modern day, the Kents only have a dial up phone in their home. In fact, they don't even have cable, just an antenna for the television. The tech in the pod allows Pidge to scan for local communications devices, but cell phones are nowhere to be seen.

They'll have to find the farm couple and physically flag them down once Leather is out of the way. Fortunately, their photos, and a picture of the car (with license plate) were in the files they were given.

The pod does have useful technology though. Defense systems, for instance, meant to blast away meteors and other space debris. The technology on board can also potentially be used to even mess with the nearby power lines, either causing local transformers to overload them with electricity or even drawing it into the defense systems to make them more powerful.

As for Leather...

He grins the moment he finally breaks free.

...and then tsks as he floats there, crackling away.

"Bad gamble, kid. As far as powers go, I've got the works."

And with that he aims a punch, angling to try to punch Danny down into Tenno. The upside is with the speed and momentum he's putting into it, if he misses somehow, he'll drive himself down where Tenno wants him anyway.

As the field spreads it even allows people to be seen through buildings, especially those with some kind aberrant energy signatures.

Not far off, there's a church and up in the clocktower, the aura of someone who's laying on their stomach, arms raised as if they're holding a weapon. It's a fantastic place to make a shot, one that has a clear view of the windows of the library.
