TINKER, TAILOR, HERO, SPY - AMBUSH [PART ONE]

The small, desert town of Grevozent would perhaps seem an odd place to have an important accord if one doesn't know the history of it. Grevozent houses the Circle of the Burning Sands, an important tribal meeting place for the people of the planet Talok IV. As members of the UP that are trying to both participate in UP politics and maintain their ancient ways of life, the Talokians have extended the honor of using the Circle to both the UP delegation and the leadership of the Second Galaxy. Today is a good day for the accords. During Talok's winter season, the desert cools down to a balmy 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Once a historic battleground, the Circle of the Burning sands houses a circular dent in the desert stone where crowds can gather, with a large circular meeting platform in the middle. Around the Circle are the ruins of many battles, with junk that ranges from broken hover-drives to ancient spears. This small field of junk extends right up to the edge of town, which circles the meeting place, and where the large crowd has pushed into. Instead of being considered ugly, the Talokians regard the battle ruins as beautiful, mostly due to their advanced age -- it has been a very long time since the Talokian tribes have warred against each other, largely because of the tribal accords and treaties agreed to in this ancient meeting place.
It's a historic day for both the United Planets and the people of the Second Galaxy. Even achieving consistent contact with each other, when both galaxies are so far apart, was a tremendous feat all its own. The Legion has been formally invited to the event by both parties. The United Planets credits the Legion for making contact and starting positive political relations with the Second Galaxy, and the beings of the Second Galaxy credit the Legion with saving them from the Legion's own insane, tyrannical teammate Element Lad (also known as the Progenitor) and for providing them with new paths to wander via the threshold gates. Even despite many of the Legionnaires present having no part in that, they're clearly welcome here, with citizens of both the UP and the Second Galaxy clearly showing them warmth whenever they see their "L" insignias.
While some Legionnaires or guests of the Legion are here as a civilians just watching the historic event, some were ordered here by Kid Quantum, juuuust in case the Science Police garrison in charge of security has some problems. The UP refused to let the Legion take total control of security, but there's no reason they can't stick around when they were invited, right? As such, Kid Q recommended they attend in uniform (for those that have one), just in case they need to get their hands dirty. Several of the Legionnaires native to the universe have also come and are standing near the two delegations.
Those that are just attending to watch have been cautioned to evac in the case of a crisis, but as an attack hits the area, they'll find that they can't escape -- no one can. A device is activated that suddenly cuts off all threshold traffic and comms communication for miles.
It's right after the accords are signed that the Fatal Five all explode onto the scene with an illegal teleporter: Tharok the deadly, genius cyborg; Mano with his matter-destroying hand; Validus, the mindless behemoth with mind lightning; the Persuader, armed with his atomic axe; and the Emerald Empress and the Eye of Ekron, a deadly assassin bonded with a sentient magical artifact. They appear on the massive podium stone at the center of the circle in a flash of blinding light and smoke, and all the delighted cheers turn to screams as the crowd recognizes who they are.
Their initial attack on the two delegations, one aiming to kill the Kwai Elder Enkemet and UP President Winema Wazzo, is blocked by Brainiac 5's shields, allowing the two delegations to start to retreat. But then the tides suddenly turn and it's made clear that the delegations and politicians aren't the only target -- or even the main target. Tharok transforms his robotic arm into a ray that blasts at Brainiac. The ray penetrates his shields and the implants on his face visibly spark and burn out. Letting out a pained cry, he falls down on the stone stage, staring blankly at nothing and muttering impossible math. Kid Quantum is stopped next, as the Emerald Empress throws a strange disc that impacts with one of her quantum bursts. It results in a her being stuck in a localized field of time repeating over and over. Each time she cries out, "Umbra, get Brainy out of here, then get the others to--" and then attacks. Then the loop starts over again.
Several other native Legionnaires are defeated in similar ways, each method tailored specifically towards their weaknesses, and then Umbra briefly enshrouds them all in shadow to teleport them out of the line of fire. Her voice sounds out over the crowd a moment later, loud enough for all of them to hear even over the terrified screams and the blaster blasts of the Science Police. She sounds extremely aggravated, but this is her homeworld and the Circle of Burning Shadows is a sacred place -- one the shadow champion of Talok IV is meant to protect with their life. She can be seen fighting hand to hand with the Emerald Empress, slipping in and out of her shadows.
"Legionnaires!" Umbra cries out. "All comms and the threshold gates are down and the imbeciles in charge of security are running around like cheloks with their heads cut off. We need to take control of the situation. We must protect the crowd and the delegation but the Fatal Five seem to mostly be targeting us. They seem to have ways to directly counter our -- AAAUGH!"
She's surprised by the appearance of copies of the Fatal Five. Green constructs created by the Emerald Eye of Ekron, imitations of the Fatal Five possessing all their powers and abilities, suddenly appear all throughout the crowd -- and they and the Fatal Five suddenly zero in on the Legionnaires. A construct of Validus striking Umbra in the back of the head by surprise takes her down.
"We're coming for you, Legion!" cackles the Emerald Empress. "And now we know exactly how to defeat you. New or old, we'll make every one of you regret putting on those rings -- for what little time you have left, that is!"

GENERAL FIGHTING
no subject
Dipper was a lot better than before, thanks to his telepathic treatments, but he still had some anxiety when he was in groups of people. Either he occasionally flashed to being surrounded by yellows as they beat him down during training, jeering and taunting him, or he worried that he'd have the random urge to hurt them. What if the telepaths were wrong about him being sane enough to be out and about? What if his brain relapsed and he went all crazycakes again and attacked someone innocent? The only way to prove he was mostly recovered was to test it by actually going out into the world again but that still wasn't easy.
And naturally, things got harder. Explosions shook the meeting grounds and knocked over tables. Through the crowd, he saw the supervillains appear on stage, heard everything go all to heck.
He could've run. He knew he was supposed to, as someone that wasn't part of the official guard team. But he was relatively with it and the Legionnaires from this universe were already down and out. That meant the situation was bad. Like...beating the bad guys was maybe impossible bad.
But that was what being a hero was, right? Fighting back even if things seemed impossible. That's what Great Uncle Ford had told him once.
"Let's see, I can escape oooor take out all my frustration towards the last bad guys on the new bad guys," Dipper said, holding up both hands as if weighing both options. Then he made his decision. "Unhealthy projecting it is."
Powering up his teke shields, he floated up above the crowd to look out for bad guys to pummel or teammates or civilians that needed help.

It's only too bad she's surrounded by seven. She'd planned to take out one, vanish and then escape straight up with her flight ring while the other four went for the gap in the circle. Great plan...except for the fact that they saw through it almost immediately. When a construct of Validus grabbed her ankle and yanked her to the ground, she was again visible for the whole world and a sitting duck for the rest of them, who could attack her far more quickly then she could pick herself up off the ground.

But there are members of one of the delegates in the group behind him. There's a family. There are kids. And there is no guarantee that the construct will follow Wash if he leaves - it might just turn on the civilians that he'd be leaving defenseless and kill them all before pursuing him. Leaving is not an option, which means dying definitely is.
But he's fought ugly things and lived. He fought Locus. He fought Covenant. He fought the Meta. He's lived through impossible odds before, and he's going to make for damn certain this is another one of those times.
Somehow.
A flicker of movement up high in the corner of his vision catches his eye; a split second later, his HUD marks it as friendly. It's Dipper, he realizes suddenly. He'd known about the kid's powers, but holy shit-
He flips on voice amplification in his radio and calls for him. "Dipper, I need cover!"

Which wasn't to say the explosions were a relief, but hey, at least he hadn't been dragged out here for nothing.
He launched himself straight towards one of the myriad constructs - of Validus, specifically. "Green's not your color, buddy. Think I might have to take it back."
(Hal, running headfirst into trouble? What a shock.)

There are so many things going on that Pidge doesn't have time or energy to process it all. What they really need right now is a way to take down the entire Fatal Five at once.
...Which isn't the worst idea ever. Or at least nobody's around to say it is the worst idea ever.
Good enough.
Pidge suddenly started scrabbling around in the piles of junk and the dirt outside, an action that might look insane to anyone on the outside. Heck, it felt insane as she was doing it. The fact that this used to be a war zone doesn't mean that it wasn't cleaned up in the interim between then and now. The odds of finding an unexploded mine felt like a million to one-
Or make that one to one. Buried in what might have been the trunk of what looked to be an old battle cruiser was a small device that had a timer, wire, and some black casing. Probably a bomb! Assuming she could get it activated, it might be enough to take out...Well, OK, it could take out one of the five if she used it right. Good enough. Now all she needed was to get it working. Prodding a few of the buttons only produced a flicker on the display. Not good enough. She'd need time to get this working.
And maybe an ally to help out. "Dip-" Right, codenames. It still seems silly. "Captain Mystery!"

With the explosive burst on stage, his head whipped around to find that checking the crowd had been a moot point. The stage lit up between the clash between light and Brainiac 5's shields. Aizawa took off. The first task he set to was to make sure civilians could be ushered away but even that seemed to be a poor decision on his part. The crowd wasn't being attacked directly. Legionnaires were being brought down, one by one. Even before Umbra's announcement, he could tell what was happening. He narrowly ducked, pressing forward past the people he had ushered to exits. Once the crowd loosened up, he threw on his slotted goggles. Without announcing himself, Aizawa ducked as he snuck around to flank one of the constructs. He focused his 'Erasure' quirk, looking to erase its powers and grant a few Legionnaires reprieve from being attacked.
For the moment, he had to keep out of direct sight.

One of them in particular broke apart pretty easily, though.

But Tharok pinged every member of the Legion with his cyborg brain when the attack started, and he's been tracking them around the battle using the dull buzz of readings from their Legion standard equipment.
He reconfigures his arm into a ray gun and blasts at Eraserhead. The noise of his arm reconfiguring is just enough to give Eraserhead warning.
"Now now, we know how you operate -- hanging on the fringes of each battle, right? On Kid Quantum's orders."
Clearly, the Fatal Five knows far more than they should.

But this wasn't his dimension. There was no guarantee that things would work the same here - constantly running on some cosmic version of Murphy's Law, at least as far as he was concerned - as they did back home. Still, while his guns are loaded with stun ammunition and he has his baton maglocked to his thigh, he's also snuck in his combat knife, sheathed and in his soft storage, just in case. Because the paranoia never shuts up.
Of course, his paranoia gets a nice opportunity to scream I TOLD YOU SO, because things absolutely never go right around him. He snaps into action, reaching for the Science Police officer nearest to him. "Leave the fighting to the Legion - they're going after us anyway. Focus on getting civilians to safety." He speaks in a hard tone that conveys he expects to be obeyed and obeyed now. That imparted, and without sparing a second glance to the officer - hopefully that took, because he can't look back now - he draws his knife and throws himself into the fray.
no subject
Then, there's a sharp whistling noise above. In another time, another place, this noise would be accompanied by near instantaneous panic and screaming. The second construct, not being from either, only realizes something is wrong when he is suddenly engulfed by a ball of blue-purple flame, precisely aimed so that Wash doesn't get caught in the crossfire.
Night Furies never miss.

When all hell breaks loose, he's immediately on the move. Even if he's not the strongest or most durable member of the Legion, he's still used to being one of the most formidable people in a room and he immediately guns straight for the Fatal Five. Let the more vulnerable members of the team focus on moving people. He's pretty quick and he can afford to draw heavy fire, he's always been good for that.
What he doesn't expect is for a construct of the Emerald Empress to spring on him, clapping something onto the breastplate of the MJOLNIR suit. It's a small round device that immediately flashes to life with electricity. The Chief's shields flare with bright gold sparks response, and he's suddenly locked in place as the construct leaps clear. All of the armor's systems flash warnings on his HUD, and he can't move.
He strains against the jammed armor, its reinforced joints shuddering with his effort, but he still can't shift it. His suit is locked down tight. Fuck.

But it wasn't until the fighting broke out that that grin grew three times in size.
"ALL ABOARD!"
The constructs directly in front of Wash never saw it coming. From the side, the sound of an engine grew closer and closer, before the constructs were charged into by what looked like a small train. Some of them flew into the air, while others simply shattered from the impact alone. However, one unlucky construct was carried all the way against the wall...
... Where Reinhardt promptly turned it into a thin green mist from the impact alone.
"Please keep your arms and legs inside the Pain Train at all times, my friends."

After meeting all the aliens he had on his trip through the cosmos the thought was kind of cool: That all these planets and species would come together for something besides black market smuggling and gladiator arenas. But of course there was an attack and of course they needed guys to protect the peace, like always. That's what heroes are for.
Still so cool!
...Until a construct takes a swing at him, missing his head but snapping his hockey stick in two. It's why he carries more than one, but he doesn't have enough time to get it out before he's grabbed and tossed to the side.
no subject
And yet, even with all the different ways this whole scene could go further south... Reinhardt grinned. His excitement absolutely palpable, as he took another rocket hammer swing at one of the green constructs, and watched it shatter to pieces.
"BRING ME ANOTHER!"
His words, filtered through the helmet, were absolutely meant to be a challenge. The older man facing more of the constructs, looking ready to fight... before he immediately turned away from them, and rocket charged in the opposite direction. Even if he was thrilled to fight, he was also still aware that there were too many civilians around. And with the constructs targeting legionnaires anyway... well, he'd always been good at making sure the enemy was paying attention to him, and only him. Why stop now?
"WHAT'S WRONG, YOU COWARDS? CAN'T KEEP UP WITH AN OLD MAN?"
He could hold out until back-up arrived. All he needed to do was make sure they were on him, and no one else. Besides, that gave him more time to wail on them, and make sure they were all gathered on one spot. It was a win-win situation, as far as the old man with the powerful melee weapon was concerned.
no subject
And with his great scythe, he has quite a lot of reach.
He finds himself backed towards a fellow Legionnaire, one that he hasn't met as of yet, but judging from his enthusiastic challenges, he's a good man to have at one's back in a fight, so the general truly doesn't mind.
A wide sweep of his weapon scatters the constructs before him, clearing the way for Kozmotis to join the circle cleared around the other warrior.
"Perhaps the odds will be evened with two old men, eh?"

It was hard not to be drawn towards Reinhardt. The guy was impossible to miss and his voice carried pretty far, even in all this chaos.
"You know." She said, stopping by and beating up the rest of the copies.
"You really should consider taking up bowling." He already showed to be pretty good at it what with making himself into a ball and slamming into things.

Gwen was glad that she'd kept herself on guard throughout the accords. It was pretty cool, in actuality. How often could she really see something like this happen right before her eyes? But it was because it was so important that she kept her eyes open, on the lookout for anything that seemed off.
And yep, there it was. Right there.
The moment where her concerns had all been validated.
They were pretty much on their own and at a disadvantage already. Cool.
Alright, well, this what the Legion did. Right? And she could start by beating up the green copies. Something about smelled wrong, though. Not as in literally but... The way those guys just took out Brainiac and the others...
How did they make it look so easy?
[Closed to Dipper]
The big angry thing, the one that wasn't actually a copy, had grabbed Gwen and thrown her straight into one of the stone walls. No big deal, right? She could take being slammed against a wall no problem. Except for the part where he was actually really freaking strong and the impact definitely knocked the wind out of her. Not only that but... that time he'd picked Gwen up and grabbed her by leg? Yeah, it turns out he also shattered her ankle. The pain was excruciating and she could not stand up at all. The impact against the wall sure didn't do her any favors, either. Without being able to stand, she would have no leverage on her punches, and kicking was out of the question. Her shooters still worked, but...
She needed to think of something, and fast.
Because big, strong and nasty was heading right towards her.

Stopping Validus' charge towards Gwen took nearly everything he had. Dipper's feet dug into the sand and skidded as Validus pushed him back. He put down extra prongs of telekinesis, digging them into the ground for extra leverage.
Finally, the charge was stopped but Validus started pounding his fists against Dipper's teke shield. The strain of holding it up was enough to make Dipper's nose start bleeding. His eyes glowed bright blue.
"Can you get up?" he called out to Gwen. "Or is something broken?"

Tadashi had been attending as a guest rather than as a guard, but it wasn't like he was going to stand around and let the attack go on. He might not be able to create walls of flame without risking burning the delegates or the other guests or the downed Legonnaires, but fiery blasts do some damage to the constructs and serve as a distraction to cover the flight of the non-combatants.
...Or, at least, they did until a construct of Tharok burst through the flames and crushed his power-control gauntlet -- and his wrist, too. Tadashi screamed in agony and the still-smouldering burn marks where his blasts had clipped walls or wreckage burst into flame. The construct twisted him around by his shattered wrist, and Tadashi screamed again.

However, what they didn't expect was for the red soldier to wander off and get lost as soon as they turned their back on him. Donut on his part manages to get back in time for the ambush. But with none of his instructors nearby he's left in the middle of a deadly battle with no clue to what's going on aside for the fact that they're in the middle of a battle and suddenly all of Sarge's drills snap him into action. Thus, this is how the soldier in pink armour finds himself up high throwing grenades down at the enemy below.
"You get a bomb, and you get a bomb, and you get a bomb!"
He sounds utterly happy as explosions go off in front of him but the fun is short lived when one of the enemies spots his position and promptly tosses a huge rock his way making him stumble back enough for him to lose his footing and suddenly falls down the side of the building never even remembering his Legion ring or its ability to grant him flight. So he keeps plummeting with a yell of fear following him all the way down.
