TO HAVE AND TO HOLD [modplot]

Who| Anyone who wants in
What| "To Have and to Hold" plot
Where| The planet Olum, Matihara Temple
When| Set vaguely the same time as "Gods Among Us" and "Other Mother"
Warnings/Notes| N/A

The planet Olum is a genuinely welcoming place. While the clothes they have to wear for the rituals are a bit...odd (provided they don't opt for coverups), they are comfortable, especially with such a balmy climate. Despite the Olumites allowing outsiders into their ceremonies, there's a distinct lack of tourist-ey elements; no gift shops, no merchants selling anything, just a spirit of genuine unity and celebration. The Olumite marriage guides seem to genuinely care about helping people with their relationships, and seem happy to share their cultural traditions with other species.

As far as missions go, it's definitely a nice vacation from the usual life or death struggles.

It means the Legionnaires have no distractions. They have to settle in and try to navigate this while faking sincerity as best as they can.

This is going to be one of those stories that will be hilarious in retelling and is horribly awkward right now. Wash should know; his life is comprised of those kinds of stories.

But the younger Olumite has thrown them a lifeline, and Wash latches on to it, offering her that same half-embarrassed smile. "It's alright - she caught us a little off guard is all, and, well, he's just shy." He pats Chief's arm affectionately. "But thank you." It's gratitude and a polite dismissal - everything's fine; you're free to take your grandmother and go.

The younger Olumite's smile is still somewhat strained, but grateful as she steers her grandmother away.

"Goodbye!" she says. Thank you, she mouths to Wash in particular.

"You're very fortunate to have what you do, I hope your union is a long and happy one!" the elder calls over her shoulder.

"Nana, you're embarrassing me!"

As the women go, the Chief glances sidelong at Wash, arching one eyebrow.

"Shy?"

It would be the first time anyone's called him that, even if it's just a cover. It's hilarious.

Perhaps notably, he hasn't bothered to move away from Wash or pull his arm back yet.

Wash just smirks and pushes his shoulder into Chief's ribs - he'd have to readjust everything to elbow him, and he doesn't really feel like doing that. "Hey, if you have better shorthand for 'doesn't like to talk to strangers,' I'd love to hear it."

His other hand is still on Chief's arm, and he's not really thinking about it. It's comfortable.

Okay. That's fair. It's even a lot better than "asocial" or "stunted" or "not very good at any of this, really, please don't expect anything of him". Thanks, Wash.

The Spartan shakes his head a little, clearing away the thought, the concern for this situation, and all reason to remain standing here.

"Come on," he says. "It's going to be a long hike."

And with that, he disentangles himself from Wash. The preliminaries are over and they have a job to do, he focuses back in on it with his usual laser intensity.

He waits for Wash to step with him before leaving the stones to sink back into a hum, then their former silence.
