RESISTANCE IS FUTILE - [modplot/log catchall]

Who| Everyone who signed up
What| "Resistance is Futile" plot catchall
Where| All over the place, but mostly Colu
When| After the network briefings and deployment.
Warnings/Notes| cw: zombies, body transformation (probably). If your subthread has something triggery pop up, put it in a subject of the one of the comments.

The entire planet Colu is a sprawling urban mess, one of the worst environments to fight zombies. Yes, the cities are clean and impressive and yes they're meticulously planned, but they're planned for elegance, efficiency, and ease of transportation -- not defense. While Colu had suffered under the yoke of various oppressors in the past, that was over a millenia ago, and they've grown complacent, thinking their world untouchable due to their technological superiority.

Now they're paying for it. Robo-zombies swarm through the various mega-cities, spreading their disease by touching or wounding their prey. Due to the many walkways, hover-lift tubes, maintenance tunnels, and sewer systems, there seems to be no way of stopping them.

When the Legion first arrives, it seems hopeless. The Coluan Home Defense Forces aren't used to combat and are struggling to set up defensive zones. But then something unexpected happens.

Pods drop in all over Colu from orbit. The CHDF regard them with suspicion and disdain, but they have their orders, and the civilians regard them with fear, despite word starting to spread about who's come to help.

Kid Q's voice comes over the comms and while it's hard to hear it through the crackling, she sounds absolutely delighted.

"Look alive, folks, we just got a miracle. It took some negotiating with the CHDF, but they finally relented on accepting some help from others beyond us."

The pods all burst open and Robotican combat mechs start rolling and marching out, spreading out over all of Colu.

"The Roboticans haven't been able to translate it to a cure because the virus was meant to interact with them differently than organics, but due to their disaster preparedness, they were able to develop a block to the Brainiacs' virus and only suffered a few casualties. Robotican leadership says they're eager to have their chance to make reparations to organics by defending them from this threat -- and that they're honored to stand with the Legion."

It's not a magic fix. It'll still be a deadly struggle. But at least they've got more than the inexperienced CHDF at their backs.

"Let's make the most of it, Legionnaires."

[ooc: This will be used as a plot catchall, but you can make your own log posts in Legion Missions set in the plot if you like. All major plot parts on Colu will be set up here, with "The Reject Pile" part set in the Legion World comm (with an accompanying network post). That said, if you'd like to set individual plot threads on Legion World, you can also start your own Legion World posts in [community profile] legionworld.]

Defending a low-priority zone

[personal profile] walkingballpit 2017-08-11 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
When he'd talked to Kid Quantum about wanting this assignment, Robbie had pictured something less urban. The big town in a rural area - that sort of thing. It had taken a few minutes for the learned and forgotten information from the Legion geography and history classes to come back to him.

Almost all of Colu's populations lived in its large cities, and that wasn't an exaggeration. Less than 1% of the billions and billions of Coluans lived in the machine-covered wasteland that passed for countryside, which meant what 'low priority' actually encompassed was worse than he'd imagined.

The comparatively tiny coastal city of Drr'kt had its fair share of skyscrapers and, if Robbie had to ballpark it, the population of Queens shoved into the space of Manhattan. If the city did get targeted, the small force allocated to Drr'kt was not going to be able to prevent some losses. Robbie kept reminding himself of that as he ran himself ragged, doing whatever he could.

Option A: Pre-Fight

"Yes, I know they're built to withstand a zetatonne of force per meter! You've told me. Three times." Robbie was getting a brutal reminder about why Coluans had a reputation of being arrogant and snotty: some of them were really arrogant and snotty. Also, he and they all knew that he was the idiot in every conversation. "And that's fantastic. I'm trying to tell you that if you keep telling people to shelter in place no matter what they see or here, you're basically turning them into giant barrels full of fish - and this analogy is not helping me, is it? Grife, it shouldn't be this hard."

The military type he's arguing with, who was fairly considerate and recognized that Speedball was trying to help, waved Robbie off in the direction of comm equipment with the suggestion that Robbie see to an implementation of Robbie's good idea of a broadcast telling the local population that the Legion was here and that he could even include the message that they should dress to cover as much organic skin as possible "as if that wasn't readily apparent."

But, no, he was not at leave to suggest that the people seek shelter anywhere other than the huge, sentients-be-here, housing unit towers.

"Don't you have any urban explorers?," he shouted after the officer. "There has to be ancient off-the-map subway tunnels somewhere!"

Option B: Fight

The first attack in Drr'kt sounded more like a recon mission to Robbie's X-box-infused war tactics. A fast-moving robo-zombie was spotted tracing the city's borders, occasionally trying its luck on whatever sentient it spotted. One quickly became three became eight, before a surviving CHDF patrol got the word out.

Robbie was moving to intercept a group of four on one of the highest walkways, intending to blast them off it. They're hard to kill, they're hard to kill. Maybe if he hit them hard enough, he could punt them into the ocean. "Let them get close enough that we don't miss."

Option B

The slight elf at Robbie's back surveys the approaching swarm, eyes darting from one target to the next. Clustered close together? Yeah. She might have a plan for this. "Missing won't be the problem," she assures him, her grip on her staff tightening.

This is all fairly horrifying, as that sort of thing goes. But she imagines they'll either have time to feel that horror later, when the threat subsides, or they'll be dead and it won't be an issue anymore. That's a way of coping with this, right?

"You've got a plan?" she continues, quirking an eyebrow at Robbie.

"I have got a plan," he replies in a staccato, assured manner, giving every word weight. It's shockingly true: he has a plan. Robbie suspects that it's one of those plans that will immediately fall apart, but it could be so dumb it's brilliant, too. "It's a great plan. I'm excited to be a part of it."

That's what he hopes, anyway.

"So, we can't kill them," he continues, expecting her to not interrupt with the logic of throwing them into lava (which they don't have) to destroy every nanite in the former Coluans, "but what if we constantly knock them back into the same cleared area? Are they dumb enough to keep coming at us? How long can we keep them in that loop?"

[personal profile] hallaifyouherd 2017-08-15 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"...and that's the plan. Just keep hitting them backwards long enough to manage something else."

She stares at Robbie a moment like he's completely lost his mind, before shaking her head. A little laugh escapes her as her lips twist upwards.

"Why not. It buys us time, at any rate. I'd like to see what works against these things, anyway."

[personal profile] walkingballpit 2017-08-18 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
"That's the plan," he confirms with a touch of smug happiness.

He's well aware that it's completely crazy and that he is perhaps trying to take foolishly good care of the Coluans' bodies by not pitching them into the non-existent lava. Nevertheless, Robbie is pleased that she, too, is on board with attempting the stalling approach.

"You know," he says conversationally as he slams his foot into a wall to get of burst of energy bubbles to direct at the rapidly approaching ... things. "I bet an electro-magnet would work really well on them. They screw up computers, and, if they're anything like Brainy, they were almost computers already."

[personal profile] hallaifyouherd 2017-08-18 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Really."

Of course they have no such things where she's from, but she's made a study of the technology since she's arrived. Enough to gather where he's going with this, and turn her gaze back to the approaching hoard.

A moment later and something crackles down her staff, sparking from her fingertips and lifting the loose wisps of her hair.

"What about lightning?"
walkingballpit: (24)

[personal profile] walkingballpit 2017-08-21 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh yeah," Robbie drawls the words out as a barrage of energy bubbles send a pair of oncoming attackers flying backwards. "Hm. I got to work on the angle to get some serious distance."

By this point, his hair is starting to frizz up as well, and Robbie sharply turns to look at her. Then, he takes a good-sized step back, so they aren't quite in line with each other. "I can confirm that my Macbook hates lightning, so I say go for it."

They're not... people at the moment, and they can't be killed right now anyway. He doesn't want to think about it anymore. He needs something else, anything. "Cause ohm my god, they're putting up some resistance."
hallaifyouherd: (fenedhis)

[personal profile] hallaifyouherd 2017-08-23 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a yes? Yes. Yes it is.

She twists the staff around to lie against her back as she darts forward, closer to the action, before Robbie can say one word or another. The energy bubbles still appear to be coming, at least for a time, but she darts around them, weaving and ducking. This is familiar, moving through a chaotic battle, chaos all around.

Finally, when it seems she's close enough, the staff whirls out from behind her back, lightning now openly crackling along its length, before she smacks it down against the ground. The energy bolts forward, slamming full-strength into the nearest creature...

Only to then spread. Bouncing from one to the next in a chain, seizing their bodies with magical energy and stunning them momentarily.

"Somehow, I just can't see these guys having much in the way of urban explorers." The familiar voice comes from above, but that's probably not that surprising to Robbie. After all, Vance's part in all of this is going to mean he's on the move quite a lot.

He drops down, though, setting down beside Robbie. "On the other hand, I'd be very surprised if they don't have a map of everything subterranean around here."

[personal profile] walkingballpit 2017-08-21 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"They're not very carpe diem," Robbie replies without looking up. There's a few voices on this team that he'd know in his sleep, and it's not a surprise that Vance is checking in with him. "More like carpe di-eh-maybe not."

He folds his arms across his chest and tilts his face towards Vance. "I'm sure they do, but it would have to be a map that isn't readily available digitally. I want to find a place more off the grid to use as a shelter, but someone thought it'd be a swell idea to make the entire planet the grid."

[personal profile] sir_vancelot 2017-08-21 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, good luck with that one." Vance looks around and shakes his head. "I'm pretty sure that most of these people would faint if they ever saw something so low tech as a smartphone from home. The idea of being off the grid? I don't think it's ever crossed their minds."

It's easy, giving these people a little bit of shit. Mostly because they kinda deserve it.

"Pretty sure my old Speak n' Spell would give them a stroke," Robbie says with a cheeky half-grin. "That's what I want for Christmas. I want to send each and every Coluan a pile of 90s tech. Oooh, like a Mac IIe."

Jokes are cheap and plentiful today. The serious stuff has to crowd in between them, because it's the only way to keep moving forward. "They're telling people to shelter in place. I mean - block off the exits to a skyscraper takes what? 10 people? 12? And then whoever's in that building is basically - converted. There's got to be somewhere they haven't turned into a CPU farm where people could hide."

[personal profile] sir_vancelot 2017-08-22 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
Even in the midsts of all the trouble they're currently up to their ears in, Vance takes a moment to laugh. Because, yes, it's the only way forward. He sobers, though, as the conversation moves on. "I'll be doing my best to get those people out of danger, of course. But. If there's anywhere like that on this planet, Robbie, I'm sure you can find it."

He has a lot of trust in his friend, after all. And Robbie's never let him down before.

[personal profile] walkingballpit 2017-08-22 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It might sound like they're being terrible people, but inherent in the jokes and laughing is the tacit agreement that, yes, the Coluans will be around to get Christmas presents. Whether or not they want gifts for an ancient, Earth born holiday, well, that's another story, and Robbie looks forward to whatever snark comes out of the exchange.

He doesn’t share Vance’s confidence in himself though. “I’m going to try – until they get here. After that…”

After that, he’s going to be too busy fighting them off to keep looking, and he’s afraid that it’s the wrong call. Robbie doesn’t think he’ll be able to make any other plan. Sacrifice the immediate lives for a hypothetical idea that maybe there’s a way to hide a large chunk of the population once the rapidly increasing infected are in this zone? “There’s no good ideas.”

He gives Vance an appraising look. Robbie hasn’t ever asked about the limits of his friend's telekinesis, not in so many words; he only knows that Vance is significantly more powerful than he was at sixteen. “What’s the biggest shield you can make, and how long can you keep it up?”
sir_vancelot: (Default)

[personal profile] sir_vancelot 2017-08-22 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds terrible, sure, but it's one way that they know how to cope. Jokes and being able to laugh at themselves has gotten them out of more than a few situations by now. Or, at least, kept them going until they could get there.

Vance reaches out, placing a hand on Robbie's shoulder. "No, there's no good ideas, but any idea is at least a start. And more than they've had." With a jerk of his chin to the Coluan guard nearby.

The question, though, gets a tip of his head. "I don't know," he finally says. "I can hold it pretty indefinitely it it's not being hit, but that's like asking somebody how long they can hold a balloon, you know?" It's as easy as breathing to him these days, just to keep up a normal shield. "I've never tried figuring out how big it can go, but the more space I have to cover, the fewer hits it's going to be able to take. Or, rather, the more hits it's likely to take at one time, which can break my concentration." He shrugs. "I don't think anything out there is going to hit as hard as Zuras did, but they don't have to, either."
