Who| Jason and the Beachwarmers
What| Going camping! Making friends! A mixed thing, just do whatever and have fun.
Where| On a private island owned by R.J. Brande.
When| Post Naltor and Mystery Plots, pre-next plot
Warnings/Notes| None yet

All in all, the beach itself is gorgeous. Clear waters, a perfect temperature, white sand, some nice, shady woods deeper in on the island... It all looks fantastic, like it came off of a postcard. There's not a hint of land off in the distance, but they can get a threshold gate if the need arises.

Jason honestly didn't plan much out. He's packed for different activities, like food (sadly lacking in hot dogs), sun lotion, drinks (though if you wanted something alcoholic, you'll be disappointed), a beach ball, a volleyball with a net setup, some tents, and some snorkeling gear, all pre-staged on the island. He tried to cover a bunch of activities, but he really didn't have much of an idea of how many people would be showing up or what they'd want to do, so he just prepped for the most possible.

If they day is crisp and beautiful, the night is something else entirely. Still perfectly warm, by the time the Legionnaires have worn themselves out, the stars are out in force. With no light pollution around, the night sky is full of colors and stars, with the visible portion of the Milky Way cutting a majestic arc across the sky. Night swimming is still available, the water's fine and the camp fire is visible for a long way.

[[Whoops, I'd meant to post this on Saturday, but time got away from me. I thought about setting up activities and such, but decided that it'd be best just to let people come up with whatever. If it involves gear of some kind, feel free to handwave that Jason took care of it. There's a few different activity headers put up, so feel free to tag around or post a separate starter if you have any further ideas or want to do something else!

If you didn't tag here, don't worry about it. We can handwave any of that in favor of the main action here.

and now posted in the correct community. Whoops again.

"It could be argued that the Legion is something of an army, even if they aren't strictly military." Perhaps they were more accurately described as the UP's critical emergency service / liaisons.

It felt like he should comment on the fact that Grif had been forced into service. It seemed like something most people would do, but he wasn't quite certain what would be the proper way to respond to something like that. Condolence perhaps? For some reason, that felt wrong, though he couldn't quite pinpoint why. Perhaps it was best to let it go as opposed saying the wrong thing.

"So you had experience with combat on other planets before coming here then?" Or be completely insensitive and ask more prying questions. That works, too.

"Well," Grif admitted, "just one? It kind of sucked and we didn't do much. But ideally I was supposed to be shooting at aliens."

Instead, he just shot the bull with Simmons and occasionally scattered lead in a more-or-less-blue-base-ward direction.

"And dude," he added, "this is not even remotely an army. I haven't had even one sergeant threatening to shove a shotgun up my ass. It's nice. A guy could get used to this."

Grif was bitter about being pulled into that war against his will, but he was used to it by then. It was just another thing he'd had no way of stopping, and there was nothing left he could do for it but crack jokes at it.

"They did that? That seems unprofessional." He almost sounded a bit skeptical, but then, he had no idea what army life was really like. While he'd studied information about wars, very little of the knowledge he absorbed ever spoke of soldiers as individuals, or really even as people beyond their rank and accomplishments, if they were considered to be worthy of note.

He'd developed something of an expectation that all soldiers, especially those of higher rank, were always professional, calculating and reserved. A vision that Grif really didn't fit into.

"What was the war over? An invasion, or something more complicated?"

"I'm pretty sure that being a dickhead is a requirement for being a sergeant," Grif replied, shrugging. Most of his interaction with officers had been them yelling at him. He refused to consider that he'd deserved most of it.

"The aliens wanted to blow us up, and they had bigger and nastier guns so we had to blow them up first. Good news is it worked out. Bad news? I guess we decided to start shooting each other again instead."
