Who| Jason and the Beachwarmers
What| Going camping! Making friends! A mixed thing, just do whatever and have fun.
Where| On a private island owned by R.J. Brande.
When| Post Naltor and Mystery Plots, pre-next plot
Warnings/Notes| None yet

All in all, the beach itself is gorgeous. Clear waters, a perfect temperature, white sand, some nice, shady woods deeper in on the island... It all looks fantastic, like it came off of a postcard. There's not a hint of land off in the distance, but they can get a threshold gate if the need arises.

Jason honestly didn't plan much out. He's packed for different activities, like food (sadly lacking in hot dogs), sun lotion, drinks (though if you wanted something alcoholic, you'll be disappointed), a beach ball, a volleyball with a net setup, some tents, and some snorkeling gear, all pre-staged on the island. He tried to cover a bunch of activities, but he really didn't have much of an idea of how many people would be showing up or what they'd want to do, so he just prepped for the most possible.

If they day is crisp and beautiful, the night is something else entirely. Still perfectly warm, by the time the Legionnaires have worn themselves out, the stars are out in force. With no light pollution around, the night sky is full of colors and stars, with the visible portion of the Milky Way cutting a majestic arc across the sky. Night swimming is still available, the water's fine and the camp fire is visible for a long way.

[[Whoops, I'd meant to post this on Saturday, but time got away from me. I thought about setting up activities and such, but decided that it'd be best just to let people come up with whatever. If it involves gear of some kind, feel free to handwave that Jason took care of it. There's a few different activity headers put up, so feel free to tag around or post a separate starter if you have any further ideas or want to do something else!

If you didn't tag here, don't worry about it. We can handwave any of that in favor of the main action here.

and now posted in the correct community. Whoops again.

Donnie seems a little absent-minded about the action around the campfire; he'll scarf down a few s'mores, and he'll answer when he's spoken to, but everything he does, he's doing it with one hand, because his other is busy holding his omnicom and sometimes moving it around or fiddling with the settings.

"Why's the reception so bad out here? That shouldn't be happening."

Look, you can lead a nerd away from the internet, but you can't make him accept it.

When she started her senior year of high school, Videl had been convinced that there was nothing life could throw at her that she hadn't seen before. She'd seen it all, knew it all. She was at the top of her game, champion of justice, protector of her city, darling of the police force. But that was before she was a member of an intergalactic peacekeeping force in a completely different universe, sitting on a log in front of a campfire on who knows what planet next to a mutant turtle complaining about cell phone reception.

Life has its way of pulling the rug out from under you, was the quaint cliché that drifted through Videl's subconscious as she opened a can of soda.

"What kind of deserted island have you been to that has a cell phone tower smack dab in the middle of it?" she asked.

"Well, cell phones are a good comparison for the functionality, but not so much for the infrastructure..."

Uh-oh. Nerd mode activated.

"The signals actually aren't reliant on towers, since they need to be operable on any planet we visit, with no guarantee that they'd have that kind of a network already in place. So since they need to work off a more robust system that doesn't require any extra structures in place -"

Please stop him, Videl. Before it's too late.

She opened her mouth to remark on just how similar she thought the omnicoms were to cell phones, but found herself suddenly the unwitting recipient of an impromptu lecture on technology. Videl was momentarily inclined to listen for the sake of being polite to a teammate, but thought better of it when she remembered how long Gohan could ramble about technological stuff that she neither understood nor cared about.

"- then they're having signal failure just to spite you," Videl finished. She shrugged and grinned. "Even all this fancy future tech can't make cell phones any less annoying."

"Technology doesn't do spite."

Although, given that they were in the future, with intelligent robots and stuff.

"Er, non-sentient technology doesn't do spite. I don't know if the Roboticans here do that or not, now that I think about it."

The whats? Videl raised a disbelieving brow at the thought of a rank-and-file army of chrome robots a la old comic books that the name 'Roboticans' conjured in her imagination. She held off on remarking about that.

"I dunno about that," she offered skeptically, half to continue baiting him and half out of sincere believe that technology liked to be a dick whenever it damned well pleased. "Why else would my computer go out in the middle of the night while I'm writing an essay that's due the next day?" For every time that happened to her, it had happened five times to Erasa.

"It could be lots of things, really. What kind of anti-virus software are you using?"

A completely sincere answer for a not entirely sincere question.

The amused smirk that had been tugging at the corner of Videl's mouth fell as her tease was completely and utterly missed. He suddenly reminded Videl very strongly of her oblivious boyfriend's similar tendency to completely miss insinuations and hear only the literal spoken words.

"Whatever it came with, I think," she started to answer sincerely, then stopped herself with a vigorous shake of the head. "Augh, no that's not the point!" she snapped, a bit more heatedly than she intended. "How come you're so hung up on that thing out here?"

"Camping's not really my thing."

Vicious understatement, really.

"Really?" Videl was having a hard time imagining a better way to spend her down time. This place was practically an island paradise.

"Then why come out here?" she asked. "Jason doesn't seem like the kind of guy who'd force you into it."

"It's team-building, right? That's the kind of thing I figure I ought to be around for. I'm just...a lot better with machines than nature."

Videl offered an understanding shrug. "I can't argue with that; we're not much of a team here with the Legion yet." It wasn't with any anger that she said this; simply a statement of fact.

She grinned, a thought occurring to her. “I bet neither of us can list five facts about each other without looking the other up on the omnicom.”
nerdninja: (02)

[personal profile] nerdninja 2016-06-02 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
"You know, I...think you're probably right about that."

Donnie frowned. What did he know about Videl? He'd gotten the impression that she liked and was good at punching things, but that was about it.

"Right?! We're in a future that's so advanced from just about anything we've ever seen in our own worlds... But we still can't get a decent signal out on the beach?" Gwen was upset about this.

Very upset.

"It's not like it runs off a regular satellite signal to begin with, so being in the middle of nowhere shouldn't actually matter. But I can't find anything wrong with it..."

He'd been mentally poking around inside the com with his powers for a good fifteen minutes, to no avail.

[personal profile] deafleppard 2016-05-31 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Nothing's wrong, but we're still struggling to get any kind of signal." Great, sounded like a classic to her.

"Do you think they might be intentionally jamming or causing the weak signal? You know, to make it so that we can't use them as much while we're here?"
nerdninja: (17)

[personal profile] nerdninja 2016-06-02 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
"It does seem like a good method for enforced team-building." Donnie rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "On the other hand, if it's intentional, it's elegantly done enough that I can't find the problem. I don't know how many people would actually be able to pull that off. Brainy is obvious, but I think he'd be even less thrilled to be disconnected than we are."

Forced social interactions on a beach getaway... It would've been perfect if it didn't come with the whole "forced social interaction" part. "We can always just chalk it up it being the future. That's pretty much what I do for most things around here." And it's worked just fine for her so far.
nerdninja: (02)

[personal profile] nerdninja 2016-06-16 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
"It's technically not incorrect, but that's so...unspecific."

Not knowing how something worked was the kind of thing that would haunt Donnie until he did.
mirror_soldier: (Why do I feel like this?)

[personal profile] mirror_soldier 2016-05-22 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe someone is doing it on purpose..." The kid muttered.

He'd been in something close to the same mode as Donnie, though more purposefully closed off, with the majority of his attention spent on the Omnicom. And as time has twiddled by he seems to be getting more frustrated with the devices slow speed and lack of responsiveness.
nerdninja: (02)

[personal profile] nerdninja 2016-05-22 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Nothing's broken." He didn't have to run a diagnostic or pop the casing to check, with his power.

"Maybe it's someone's way of trying to force everyone to socialize."
mirror_soldier: (Nass-Head)

[personal profile] mirror_soldier 2016-05-22 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
"That's about what I presumed." With a sigh that manages to only be slightly huffy, he gives in to putting the Omnicom back down again after if freezes up; losing the patience to wait for it to function at a tolerable speed again. At least it was something of a relief to know it wasn't just his own device acting up.

"I doubt it's a coincidence that this is the first place we've had a problem with them."
nerdninja: (17)

[personal profile] nerdninja 2016-05-22 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Who'd have the know-how to mess them up that well, though? This really doesn't seem like the kind of thing Brainy would do."

Brainiac 5 would be as annoyed at the forced small talk as they were, after all, and most other sabotage attempts, he'd expect something more obvious wrong.
mirror_soldier: (Rational)

[personal profile] mirror_soldier 2016-05-25 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"True. I'm not certain who else would be capable of causing this kind of problem with them. Perhaps that's something to ask into. If it isn't something that was done on purpose that's a bit worrisome." Though only slightly. So long as their Legion rings and telepathic earplugs still functioned normally it wasn't much more than a minor inconvenience.
nerdninja: (02)

[personal profile] nerdninja 2016-05-26 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. The security protocols on these are pretty tight, so if this is deliberate and not some kind of glitch, I'd really like to know who pulled it off and whether we should expect any more of it."

Now, it wasn't much of a problem.

In other situations? It could be a hell of a problem.
