IN BRIGHTEST DAY - Mod Plot [LOG POST | 2 | IN BLACKEST NIGHT]

Who| Everyone involved in the plot
What| A space battle
Where| In the space sector around Cargg
When| If relevant, like if you want to note it's after an event.
Warnings/Notes| Things may get violent/gory!

Unfortunately, even the last Green Lanterns didn't know where the yellows or reds had hidden their central power batteries. Their long lost bases were still lost to the universe. That meant the only way to find them was to wait for them to attack.

In the space sector around the planet Cargg, reports of an asteroid mining freighter getting attacked clued the Legion and their allies into where the yellows were. By the time they got there, the red Lanterns had also joined in -- attacking all comers, including the yellows themselves. As the different groups of Lanterns collided in combat, the deaths started almost instantly. New rings started seeking owners, including those of the reds and yellows.

By now, they'd all received at least enough basic training with their rings to function in battle, and they all still had use of their normal powers.

A squad of Green Lanterns led by Kilowog gathered around the freighter, trying to shield it from attack.

"Listen up, poozers!" Kilowog called out to his greens, leading them into the fight and setting up a perimeter. "We need to give this ship time to evac. Hold the line! If it's yellow or red, it's not getting through!"

Kid Quantum, wielding a blue ring, called out to the Legionnaires, "We need to protect that freighter! Everyone move in to support the greens. Hit and run tactics! Hit 'em fast and hit 'em hard. Let's go, Legion!"

Vaguely disturbing was perhaps a bit kind, but it still got the point across, and Hal nodded in agreement with Hiccup.

"Don't forget why we're here. The freighter's safety comes first."

Hal honestly disliked escort missions himself; he was at his best when he could let loose without having to look after anything else. But there was what you wanted to do, and what you needed to do, and all too often, those didn't have much to do with each other. He might push the limits sometimes, but he'd been in the military before he'd been a Green Lantern.

Sometimes, you needed someone else to keep you in check.

"I know. I know," said Dipper and his eyes narrowed as he thought about the welt on his leg. It still throbbed. "I know it's serious. One of them tried to go after Sam and I and --"

And he didn't have a way of articulating how traumatic that had been, those few horrible moments stolen by a Yellow Lantern that no one else saw. All of a sudden, it wasn't fun or funny anymore, but what Dipper said definitely didn't demonstrate the kind of change in attitude they were probably hoping for.

"They should be the ones that are afraid. They deserve it."

It wasn't just hate that he felt and that was why it wasn't a red ring that found him the way one had found Sam. No, he wanted them to feel fear. He wanted them to feel powerless.

That was why a yellow ring zipped onto his finger. An explosion from the fight obscured part of what the ring said.

[--PINES, OF EARTH. YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO INSTILL GREAT FEAR. WELCOME TO THE SINESTRO CORPS.]

For a moment, the yellow and green rings battled each other.

[CONFLICTING EMOTIONAL RESONANCE REGISTERED.]

[CONFLICTING EMOTIONAL RESONANCE REGISTERED.]

He could feel them both, fighting over him. Willpower versus fear. The power to defend versus the power to intimidate, the power to hold power over others. But the yellow whispered louder. It said:

"You don't have to ever feel powerless again. You can hurt the people trying to hurt you and everyone else. You can make them afraid -- the way things like Bill always try to make you afraid."

Yellow light flickered in Dipper's eyes as the ring stoked the fires of his own natural aggression -- rarely ever expressed -- and made them burn brighter. The kind of righteous hate he reserved only for monsters like Bill Cipher filled his heart and along with it came the delight he felt anytime he'd heard a tremor of uncertainty in Bill's voice.

Yes, this ring was better. Why fight it? So far, a couple of his teammates had looked at him as if he was strange, as if his constructs were scary. Too much. Something to dial back. But why? They were working. Fear was working. And fear was something he understood from all the times he'd felt it himself. He knew how powerful it was. Now he could use their power and turn it against them.

He could fight fire with fire.

[DESIRE TO CAUSE FEAR OVERRIDING WILLPOWER. TARGET SENTIENT REJECTED. SECTOR SCAN FOR REPLACEMENT INITIATED.]

The green ring left his finger and flew away. The yellow light spread over Dipper, giving his costume yellow accents instead of green ones. Yellow light quickly replaced all his constructs before they could fully fade, keeping his prisoners still trapped. Dipper looked up at Hal and Hiccup, his eyes glowing yellow.

"There's nothing wrong with disturbing as long as the right people are being disturbed."

The construct monsters didn't go away or dial down -- they only changed color and got more horrifying, springing more limbs and teeth and claws and parts they didn't need. They swarmed the reds and yellows, scattering them, sending them flying away screaming even more. The way his constructs were attacking them made it clear that even though he was using a yellow ring, too, he wasn't holding back just because they had the same color.

"I'm tired of feeling like I'm some kind of weirdo just because I happen to be comfortable with scary things. All of you would be comfortable with them too if you'd seen the things I've seen, if you lived through the end of the world the way I did --"

His fighting got more and more vicious, coming dangerously close to causing damage he couldn't come back from causing.

"-- If you had to do it without any powers, without being a superhero, without having a dragon, without having any way of really fighting back. If you had to do it all as just a scared, powerless kid. I don't need to reign anything in, what I'm doing is working. None of you understand that because you don't know what it's like to feel that kind of fear. You don't know how powerful it is."

"Great, he's gone mad with power." Hiccup said, with sarcasm so thick you could cut it with a knife.

He knew it was the ring talking, and under normal circumstances Dipper would never even be thinking along those lines. Still, the victory through fear mentality reminded Hiccup uncomfortably of Drago's worldview. A worldview, that had, at the end, been fairly successfully proven wrong.

"You think I don't know fear or being powerless? I wasn't aware being the weakest person in a village that was constantly being set on fire by giant flying lizards for fifteen years didn't count. No offense Toothless."

Toothless didn't take any. It wasn't like he hadn't been one of those giant flying lizards setting everything on fire, after all.

"It's not power, it's a crutch, One that has a bad habit of backfiring on people."
ringslinging: until you are a convinced that velociraptors are trying to kill you through your roof. (you don't know true fear)

On one hand, Hal agreed with Hiccup. On the other hand, sarcasm didn't seem likely to get the point across.

As usual, there was a rational answer and a Hal answer to the question of what would, and Hal didn't think twice before taking the plunge.

"You think I don't know fear?"

Words were one thing. Action - proof that he knew what he was talking about - was another. Hal held up his right hand, and in a smooth, deliberate motion, pulled the green ring off and let go of it. Because surely, after his history...

He was right. It didn't take a moment before a yellow ring rocketed in to take its place.

[HAL JORDAN, OF EARTH. YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO INSTILL GREAT FEAR. WELCOME TO THE SINESTRO CORPS.]

The green of his uniform faded to yellow. Yellow energy swirled, briefly taking the form of a hideous, Giger-esque space bug that curled around him protectively, almost possessively, before the construct dispersed again.

"I was Parallax's host. Literal living fear. I've been down this road already, so believe me, I know fear. It's powerful. But it's not all-powerful."

"I don't know what fight you've been watching, but I'm fairly certain we've spent the last couple hours proving it isn't all-powerful." Hiccup interrupted with an almost conversational tone.

"It doesn't do much good when people refuse to be afraid of you, and your freaky looking mustache."

ringslinging: i just got punched in the nose by a tourist (where the fuck are you?)

[personal profile] ringslinging 2016-07-14 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, hi there, Sin," Hal said blandly. "Nice of you to join us. You should be careful, though. If you keep siccing soul-eating space bugs on me and popping up to dramatically interrupt my conversations, people might start to think you're a little obsessed."

He moved as he was speaking, positioning himself in front of Sinestro - between him and the other two, making it necessary to go through him to get at Hiccup and Dipper. As soon as he was in place, his tone and his gaze sharpened.

"Leave them out of this. You and I need to talk."

Dipper listened, trying to think past all the aggression flowing through him. He could see between the lines. Sinestro was laying it out enough. It wouldn't work. It wasn't tenable. Not with Chronoblivion. The Legion couldn't afford all this distraction long-term.

More to the point, he'd thought that the Yellows were just mindless monsters, whose only goal was killing. Knowing that someone at the top was playing a whole manipulative game was more than enough reason to not want to be a part of it. Because he was tired of games. He was tired of being manipulated and used. He'd lost his body because of trusting someone he shouldn't have trusted, and only got it back thanks to his sister's cleverness -- and it'd happened because of someone else that was yellow. He wasn't letting that happen again.

This Sinestro guy was worse than Bill. At least Bill manipulated people due to pure, evil selfishness. This moron actually thought he was doing good in the universe or something.

"Okay, I am done with being manipulated by yellow people. I want my green ring back. Because that's a stupid plan. 'Blah blah blah, I'm going to make the heroes tougher by giving them a reason to be tough,' like distracting the Legion with giant battles isn't going to prevent us from protecting the galaxy."

He crept up so he was right behind Hal, hiding behind him, lightly grabbing his arm because he was maybe a little scared of being this close to the guy that was clearly the leader of the bad guys, and peering around him suspiciously at Sinestro.

"Your plan is lame and counterproductive. I'm barely more than a kid and I can see that."
wherenoonegoes: (Hiccup silly me)

[personal profile] wherenoonegoes 2016-07-16 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
"It is a very dumb plan." Hiccup agreed. And considering the people he was used to fighting, and also some of his friends, that was saying something.

"Not the worst one I've ever heard of, but it's definitely up there. You restarted a war that's been over for a thousand years. An entire millenium. That's literally the exact opposite of creating order."

Even Toothless nodded at that.

"Hal," Hiccup asked, turning to the Lantern, "you've known this guy a long time, right? Is he usually this bad at logic?"

A small part of Hiccup realized mocking the man wasn't the best idea, but once he started talking it was very, very hard to shut himself up again.

[personal profile] ringslinging 2016-07-17 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
"To be fair, it did work against the Green Lantern Corps, back in our own dimension."

Hal resisted the impulse to wince. That fight, for all that they'd beaten back the yellows, had gone exactly the way Sinestro had wanted it to. The Guardians had authorized lethal force. Yellows had died. People found a reason to fear Green Lanterns.

"Of course, copy-pasting the same plan onto a different galactic situation is pretty lazy. I expected better."

Dipper's ring spoke:

[WE WELCOME THE LOST.]

"Hal?" he said, looking up at him, confused, wondering if he knew what that meant.

[NEW PROTOCOLS RECEIVED. PREPARE TO TRANSPORT SENTIENT BEING.]

It took half a second for Dipper to comprehend the words. Just long enough for him to look at Hal and Hiccup with wide and terrified eyes. His other hand moved to try to pull the ring off but it was too late. His body stretched out unnaturally, the way someone's body might have spaghettified at the edge of a black hole.

He screamed, reaching out for them both. It was a high and terrified scream. Gone was the vindictive, laughing terror teen of earlier, or the sullen boy reveling in newfound feelings of power over others. This was the scream of a child being ripped away from reality when he'd already felt something terrible like it once before. In an instant, he was gone, transformed into a streak of yellow light that rocketed away through the cosmos.

At the exact same time as Dipper, two other Legionnaires were caught by surprise by the yellow rings they'd picked up and they suffered the same fate. Hal's ring did it just a little bit later. Enough time to pull the ring off, perhaps, but there was a reason Dipper and the others had been taken first.

"Bring. Him. Back. BRING HIM BACK YOU-" The rest of what Hiccup had to scream came out in Old Norse as his ring cut off translation.

Hiccup wasn't prone to cursing. The lengthy and disgusting art of Viking profanity was more Astrid's area of expertise than his. That he had done so was a sign that he was well and truly pissed off.

Toothless was a little more physical with his anger, firing off a blast of plasma at Sinestro.

The words were barely out of Sinestro's mouth when Hal was already moving forward. "Don't even -"

And then he was cut off by Dipper, and whipped back around to reach for him, but it was too little, too late.

Hal had no problem guessing why his own ring was so slow to the punch; it was exactly the kind of twist of the knife that Sinestro excelled at. And while he might've been left enough time to take his own ring off, if he wanted to, he knew - and he knew that Sinestro knew - that there was no way in hell he'd do it now.
