Murderworld Endgame [modplot]

Who| Everyone who signed up for Plot Endgame
What| One group takes on Arcade, the others take down the mercenary Tributes once and for all
Where| All around the arena
When| Day 3
Warnings/Notes|

Arcade had intended to allow the arena to last for 20 more days, but he wasn't anticipating the consequences of capturing the Legionnaires. That meant that his entire operation started to fall apart on Day 3 of the Legionnaires being in the arena.

The random teleportation storms zap Gohan, Chief, Spider-Woman, Videl, and Wash from whatever areas they're in and bring them all into one place: The City Zone.

Almost immediately after they got there, a hologram of Arcade appears.

"You Legionnaires have been a bit of a handful, so it's time to up the stakes."

Several turrets rise up from under the ground, making something interesting suddenly clear -- there's an underground area to the arena. There's a place for the turrets to rise up from. But before they have a chance to explore that, things get pretty harrowing.

"Bada bing, bada boom. Emphasis on the boom."

The turrets start firing plasma blasts, choom choom choom. Luckily the City Zone has lots of wreckage and concrete to hide behind, but the group will have to work together to take the turrets down so they're free of being pinned down.

Honestly, Gohan hadn't quite made the connection that the turrets were linked to an underground facility just yet. He was too caught up reacting to the situation, especially when the turrets started firing. His first instinct was to try and dodge them, to dip behind some of the wreckage and start picking off the turrets with energy blasts.

But instead, he outstretched his arms, and instantly formed a yellow energy shield around the group. Because he wasn't about to leave everyone else to fend for themselves.

"This shield's not gonna last long, so I'm open to any other plans!" Gohan called out, already feeling the strain. The turrets weren't particularly powerful (compared to, say, Stardust), but there were still a lot of them, and it was hard to focus his ki against that kind of barrage.

Things happen pretty quickly, as far as Wash is concerned. There's a teleport storm (again, goddammit), a moment of overwhelming annoyance at everything Arcade chooses to be, another moment of relief that at least he has allies here (especially Chief), a third moment of surprise - there had to be somewhere for those turrets to come from, there might be a whole underground level here-

And then plasma everywhere.

He yelps and dives behind and upturned hunk of concrete. It won't last long under a hail of gunfire, but hopefully it'll last long enough for someone with a far more useful power set to step in-

Which Gohan then does. Good. Great.

"The turrets had to come from somewhere," he starts, standing up and talking fast. "There's probably an underground level here. If we can disable them and tear one of them up, we might be able to get down there. Is anyone bulletproof?"

Videl took a few plasma shots head on before Gohan's shield went up, unable to react quicker to find cover. A thrum of vibration shot through her body each time a plasma bolt glanced off her, deflected by her vibranium skin. She instinctively grabbed her shoulder where one of the shots hit, staggering back a few steps, even though she wasn't hurt at all.

She caught Wash’s words before she had time to assess the situation herself. Barely minutes before, all Videl had been able to focus on was hunger and exhaustion that threatened to overwhelm her on this third miserable day. But all her pains were instantly forgotten at the sound of Arcade’s condescending voice, anger snapping through her and adrenaline building in her veins.

“I am,” Videl answered, straightening up. Rather, she hoped she was bulletproof; she hadn't thoroughly stress tested her vibranium skin.

Well, now is as good a time as any. With a furious shriek, she threw herself past the barrier and raced toward the nearest turret. “I've had it with this damn game!”

Immediately, all the turrets turned their attention to Videl as she threw a punch into the nearest one. Blasts bounced off of her this way and that, each causing a heavy thrum to vibrate through her. Each blast pushed her power a tiny bit higher, giving her next punch or kick that much more force as she tore into the turret.

Why. Just, so much why.

There was enough why in this that Gwen just wanted loudly yell "why?!" for everyone to hear. And honestly, she would've, if it wasn't for all the turrets doing that one thing she loved most. Shooting at her. Yup.

Gwen just absolutely loved being shot at.

Ugh.

With Gohan's barrier, Videl soaking up the hits, and plenty of debris just laying around the place, Gwen put her web shooters to use. Firing a web line at whatever she could use, and she sending the debris right into the turrets, slowly but definitely taking them down.

It says a lot about the life the Chief led that random teleportation and plasma bombardment didn't even disorient him much anymore. If he'd only had his suit, it could've been homey.

Without it, though, he was considerably less bulletproof than he was used to. Otherwise his approach would've been very similar to Videl's. He'd have to take another tack here, using the time they'd bought to quickly assess the rotating mechanisms on the turrets.

He may not be bulletproof, but he was still plenty strong.

"Moving to disable."

As the guns spun to focus on Videl, he took the opportunity to leap up behind one and wrench it around. The machine fought him but he held it steady, firing plasma at the other turrets.

Had this been any other situation, Gohan might've been impressed by how effectively everyone took out the turrets. But as things were right now, he was just too angry to focus on that. The fact that something like Murderworld had been allowed to happen, that people were dead and would never come back, it got to Gohan in a way that not a lot of things did. But combined with the blase attitude Arcade displayed, and how the man was making a televised spectacle out of all this...

It reminded him of Cell. And that would never be a good reminder.

Without a word, Gohan dropped the shield once the turrets were disabled. A hard expression on his face as he gave the area a cursory glance, and finally got a moment to breathe. "Looks like the coast is clear..." He murmured, before his gaze fell on the jammed turret. Momentary confusion on his expression, before the hard expression came back, and he started walking toward the opening on the ground.

"I'm going in." He didn't turn to look at anyone else. "Arcade's getting what's coming to him."

"When did plan become a four-letter word?" The mutter is without ire - Wash is actually pretty impressed at how quickly and effectively everyone swung into action and wiped out the turrets. He takes a look around and catches sight of the downed and jammed turret at about the same time Gohan does, and sees Gohan's expression a moment later, and oh, that's not good.

"Not alone, you're not," Wash says, tone brooking no argument. "You've got the shield - take point. I'm after you. Chief, follow me; Gwen, after him; Videl, watch our six." Hopefully the tunnel isn't too small for Chief to move in. Hopefully Gohan manages to calm down before they find wherever Arcade is hiding. Hopefully Arcade doesn't catch them closing in and flood the tunnel with acid or something equally as deadly. That's a whole lot more hopefully than Wash usually likes in a plan, but there's nothing he can do about it; all he can do now is follow Gohan and, well, hope.

Videl wasn't done beating turrets into mechanical pulp when the shooting stopped and the turrets began to descend. She gave her turret one last kick as it left, breaking off a piece and leaving it firmly wedged in place.

Gohan was the first to break the brief second of silence. His tone of voice immediately sparked concern; he didn't sound anything like himself. She hurried toward him, intending to announce that she was going too (and honestly, who wasn't going?), but Wash’s instructions cut her off.

“But I--” She started to argue, to insist that she was going to follow Gohan instead, but when she looked at Wash, she could tell this arrangement wasn't up for discussion.

“Fine,” Videl conceded impatiently. She understood Wash’s logic without needing an explanation, but her concern for Gohan still warred against her good judgment. Crossing her arms, she waited by the opening for everyone else to descend so she could take up the rear.

"God, he might just be the worst kind of supervillian. Setting up a trap and just sort of... expecting us to die to it, without actually watching."

Why was it that the bad guys always wanted to take the least amount of effort to actually try to kill them? Setting a bunch of automated turrets against them and expect that it would somehow be enough? Talk about halfhearted. That or Arcade was putting in way too much faith in lowly turrets.

The plan from Wash makes about as much sense as any, and it wasn't like she had any sort of problem against it. Now that she wasn't under attack from the turret army, she could actually, you know, keep a level head and keep going forward.

Probably.

She let out a deep breath and got into formation.

The Chief fell into line without argument, checking the battery on the plasma gun as he did. Not as much as he would've liked to walk into a fight with, but it was starting to feel like they'd finally cracked Arcade's containment. If they were lucky, this would be enough.

The nice thing about being Spartan tall was order didn't matter, he could shoot over anyone here's head with room to spare.

"Odds are he's a cocky idiot who forgot to consider backup security," he said. "But everybody stay sharp."

This was... not what Gohan was expecting. Something that became pretty obvious, as he stopped in his tracks, and took a moment to actually process what he was seeing. His hard expression fell away, slowly being replaced with confusion and curiosity. He wasn't sure what he was expecting to find down here, but... somehow, this wasn't it.

"... What is this...?" He couldn't help but mutter, gaze falling on the cells containing the wild mutations. A small energy blast forming in his hands, just in case some of them were somehow released. His shield was still up, although it wasn't so much encompassing the entire group anymore so much as it was shielding them from the front.

But honestly, he was less focused on a potential ambush, and more focused on trying to figure out the logistics of having such an expansive complex.

"Do you... do you think this place is underneath all of Murderworld? Or just where we got sent?"

Well. This is hellish.

Somehow, Wash isn't terribly surprised. He's seen some of this stuff used on the surface of Murderworld; it makes sense that there'd be a storage facility for it somewhere, and it looks like they've managed to stumble on it. "Storage facility," he says by way of very brief explanation, noting Gohan's change of expression. Confusion and intrigue is a hell of a lot easier to work with than murderous rage. Good.

"I doubt it. There's probably tunnels or teleporters or something to put these where they need to go." He pauses for a moment, feeling the words out before putting them out there. "The best we can hope for is easy access to whatever control room Arcade is using - it might be here, or there might be a way to find it from here." Hopefully. "Either way, we should keep moving."

The cell up ahead catches his attention as he finishes speaking, and Wash moves closer to it (but not too close), cautiously, knife in hand as though it'll make a difference. "What's in there?"

The rows of cages were bothering Videl far more than she felt they had any right to. Was she imagining things, or did the muttations look more miserable than threatening? She barely heard what the others were talking about. Videl wasn't really paying attention to anything besides the cages (including watching the group's backs, as she'd been instructed to do) and didn't notice they'd stop until she walked right into Gwen.

"Sorry," she said absently, leaning around the group to get a look at what stopped them.

Another cage.

"No. No way, no." Videl pushed her way through the group and grabbed the back of Wash's shirt. "Do not go in there." She tried to sound authoritative, but her voice quaked. "It's definitely a trap. He's trying to lure us all in there so he can lock us in that cage and sic all these monsters on us. Trust me," Videl entreated, her grip on Wash's shirt tightening.

Was there ever going to be a moment when Gwen didn't wish she still had her spider-sense? No. This was probably how Billy felt. But he could be a hero without it, then so could she.

She had to be better.

Gwen's eyes went wide when they made it inside. Wash calling it a storage facility made sense, which put them in a pretty good position, all things considered. Gwen figured they could cause some real damage to Arcade's stupid arena from in here. They just needed to find a good place to start. Though she was immediately distracted by a bump by Videl. "Don't worry about it."

And the sight of a prisoner inside a cage. A cage that was... pretty ordinary, really.

"Hey." She called out to the one inside. "You alright in there? Don't worry, we're gonna put an end to all of this!"

Hell of a place Arcade had down here. Wash probably had it right, with teleportation technology there was no reason to have this staging area stretch out under the whole arena. It was still big enough to be a little sobering. They'd been thrown back and forth across the thing for three days, but it was so large inside it was hard to grasp the scale of the operation while you were caught inside it.

They passed death machines and neatly stored traps, muttations rattled cages or sulked in corners as the Chief passed the tip of the gun toward small motions. At one point, another of Arcade's xenomorphs rushed at them and attempted to lash out with the blade of its tail, the bars only just too narrow to let it through.

The Chief was very, very done with this place by the time they reached the apparent prisoner cage. He tended to agree with Videl, but saying that wouldn't steady her any.

"Nobody touch anything. It might be a trap."

When Gwen called out, he waited with the others to see what response she got.

Pained coughing answered them at first. It goes on for a minute before it becomes clear that whoever's in there is laughing.

"Please. Ow. Anyone with half a brain woulda made the cell the safe spot and trap the outside." The voice, definitely male, is silent for a moment. "'Course, he's too busy setting up his lazy Battle Royale knockoff to do anything interesting like turn the floors into a slide to dump you all into a bumper car zone, isn't he? No sense of style, the murderin' bum."

Upon closer inspection, there's a battered and bruised little man chained to a wall in there with unkept red hair, white clothes nearly identical to Arcade's, and a face covered in the ugly green-yellow of three day old bruises. There's no real bed in his room, but there's a toilet and a bowl of water that're both placed just out of reach.

Still, he beams, showing a broad smile that's friendly despite the broken teeth, and spreads his hands as best he can with his manacles. "Howdy, folks. The name's Arcade. And lemme tell you what. You promise to get me out of here, I'll give you a special, once-in-a-lifetime master password for this tacky, uninspired excuse for a Murderworld."

He tilts his head forward just a bit, watching them between some of the loose strands of his shaggy, unwashed hair like an expectant child. "What d'ya say?"

For a moment, Gohan wasn't sure how to respond. After how mentally taxing the last three days had been, he wasn't quite ready to accept the possibility that there was an added layer of complexity to everything that what was going on. He figured it was gonna be simple enough: find Arcade, and bring him to justice.

But two Arcades? Well... there was really only one experience Gohan had when it came to duplicates of the same person.

"Time travel..." Gohan murmured softly, dropping his hand a bit. The energy blast in his hand dissipating, as he moved closer and easily broke off one of the chains with a simple squeeze. "You're him, aren't you. From another time, I mean."

Across the arena, the teleportation storms zap people and randomly pair them up in different places. Then the mercenary Tributes attack viciously.

Arcade is starting to realize the potential threat of having the Legionnaires in the arena. They're far more competent than the Harrubian civilians that have been tossed into things. So he's planning on upping the levels of danger for them.

All the different teams see the same hologram of Arcade.

"You Legionnaires can certainly take your licks, but it's time to make you dance. The audience loves it when I up the ante. So I offered to double the pay of my Tributes every time they kill a Legionnaire. For just a little extra incentive."

Jason was not exactly excited about being back near the land of sweets. He'd never really considered himself as having as sweet tooth prior to this, but now he was certain of it. If he didn't have to see chocolate, red vines, or other sugary substances any time soon he'd be more than happy.

It seemed he wasn't alone though and, even better, it was a familiar face. "We've gotta stop meeting like this," Jason said, although he sort of regretted it because it was kind of cliche line. But this was, what, the second time he'd been randomly teleported and run into Sam? Not to mention just their random meeting the first day Jason had arrived.

There was a pause and he listed to what their crazed captor had to say before frowning. It sounded like they were in for even more of a death match. Was this what would be considered the boss battle then, because Jason was more than ready for these little games to be over.

76 has been around the block enough to know when something is falling apart--he recognizes the last-ditch efforts of someone whose plan isn't quite going as intended. Unfortunately, Arcade seems like the type of person to get more dangerous as he gets more desperate, which means they're not out of the woods yet.

Whatever's happened is definitely bad news--to say nothing of the fact that he's unfamiliar with the Legionnaire he's apparently been dumped with.

But he'll work with it, like he always does. Without knowing what's about to be thrown at them, he's quick to motion to Ina, indicating that she shouldn't go far.

"Stay close."

[personal profile] onei 2016-10-25 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
If nothing else, the last few days (hell though they've been) have been a bit more in Ina's wheelhouse than dealing with learning how to future. Surviving in the woods (...and the desert, and the whatever the place with the unicorns was) makes more sense to her than trying to use a computer or comprehend interstellar travel. So while she wouldn't call Murderworld smooth sailing, it hasn't been as bad as it could've been.

(After that thing with Grif trying to teach her how to drive, anyway.)

The part where they randomly get dropped into new areas, on the other hand, is a bit of a cramp in her style, and she frowns as she gets a look around. One ally. No enemies apparent just yet, but she'll give that five minutes maximum before it changes, and five minutes is probably optimistic.

So she moves behind 76, back to back while they get their bearings, watching for anything in the other direction and nocking an arrow to her bow. "Do we move, or do we stay put?"

He's been here before, searching for Reaper, but he's not going to discount changes to the arena as Arcade becomes more and more desperate to put them down. 76 hefts his not insubstantial gun, activating his visor to scan the area.

"We move. Bad idea to stay still."

The last thing he wants to be is a sitting duck, and he motions for Ina to follow closely as he tries to lead them both towards some cover. Being out in the open will do them no favors.

76 nods in agreement—he’s not sure how long they’ll be uninterrupted, but they should try to get the tactical advantage while they can. High ground is about as advantageous as you can get, with the both of them wielding projectile weaponry.

“Catwalks.”

He points upward to a network of crisscrossing walkways, which will probably be about as good as they’ll get. It’s difficult to tell whether or not the mechanical noises of the zone are just ambient, or indicative of company, but he’s not going to stick around and find out.

“Up this way.”

She nods, not wasting time or breath on anything further - just starts moving with him, and scanning the area around them for a way to get up in the first place.

The ladder tucked away against a nearby wall blends in well, but not well enough to escape her notice, and she steers them towards it, glancing up to confirm that there's nothing waiting at the top. "Cover me?"

“I’ve got you.”

When the visor doesn’t pick anything up at the top of the ladder, he nods for her to take it. 76 will wait at the bottom for a few long moments, alternating between watching her ascend—to make sure that she’s safe—and keeping an eye on their surroundings, just in case.

That’s about when his visor locks onto something nearby. They’re going to want this high ground sooner rather than later. He abandons his post in favor of slinging his rifle over his shoulder and following her up.

“Think we’re about to have company.”

Great.

She doesn't complain, though - it isn't productive - and as soon as she's at the top, she posts herself near the top of the ladder, aiming her bow at the area down below to cover his ascent.

"Which way?" She doesn't doubt that he's right; she's gotten the idea about scanning technology even if it's still strange to her, but she can't pick out any movement just yet.
mylawn: (pic#10433706)

[personal profile] mylawn 2016-11-11 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
“Three o’clock.”

It’s another moment before he manages to catch up to her, but once he’s cleared the ladder he wastes no time in pointing out where his visor is pinging the signal. The whole area is dark, the sound of machinery aural camouflage for anyone trying to sneak up on them, but he can see the heat signatures and isn’t about to let them escape.

“Stand back.”

76 knows that Legionnaires are capable, but he still very much has a mentality of doing things himself. His visor locks on, he raises his rifle, and unleashes a trio of rockets onto where his visor tells him the targets are.

It occurs to him he perhaps should have tried to get them to identify themselves, lest he accidentally fire on allies, but at this point in the game, he’s fairly sure that anyone following them isn’t on their side.

But not being sure what he's referring to (until she sees him open fire on the spot in question), she's fine with leaving him to open fire, opting to keep an eye on the rest of the area instead. Nothing saying their pursuer is working alone, after all.

He'd point to indicate if he wasn't already unloading pulse fire onto the people who think they can sneak up on them. 76 reminds himself that they have the high ground--they're already playing their cards right. All they have to do is hold their position.

Unfortunately, in being the first one to open fire, 76 has effectively let their pursuers know exactly where they are. He stops shooting just long enough to duck and pull Ina down with him, return fire whizzing over their heads.

To help force herself to forget, she looked around at this new area. There were buildings all around her, large, metal things that seemed darker than they should be. She thought she could maybe hear something moving but she no longer trusted herself about that.

He's back here again, and even though he's "familiar" with the place, it doesn't make it any less confusing to navigate. It's still full of traps, it's still noisy as hell, and it's still an unpredictable death trap of an area.

He can sense something lurking around, others nearby judging by footsteps, even through the loud clangs and echoes reverberating through and between the large metal beams. The tarp he'd been carrying around before is discarded, only equipping himself with his shotgun and the single round bazooka. Last resort. For whatever it is he might need it for.

Then rhe footsteps stopped and Dipper froze in place, looking back in the direction he'd come from, worrying over what might come out of the dark.

Then, almost too fast for him to react, the Butcher flew out of the shadows, eyes glowing. The glow of his eyes was the only thing that saved Dipper from having his head caved in, because otherwise, the Butcher was just a blur.

Throwing up teke shields just in time, the Butcher punched them, trying to get through.

But Dipper isn't the only one in the room.

The Butcher turns to look at Reaper and Azula, eyes still glowing.

"I love it when you sheep are all lined up for the slaughter."

Then he starts blasting heatvision in their direction. Fortunately, unlike his superspeed, it's something that can potentially be dodged.

It's a good thing Azula has a fast reaction time, even without her powers. She manages to take in all the new arrivals and then dodge the Butcher's attack. Barely.

"What the hell is that?" she demands, her voice unsteady.

Reaper makes like the mist and gravity drops him like a blast of air. He billows out in a rush when the stream of lasers cut right through it. Again, fortunate that it wasn't as fast a super-speed.

"Detecting extreme heat," he mutters dryly, shoving aside any thoughts of betraying these unknown people for the sake of survival. More is better against the one enemy firing at them all. "Assume any and all projectiles to be fatal. Distract him."

He can use the walls and shadows and crevices around their area to his advantage, to slip into them and flank the butcher when he least expects it. At least, that's his plan. He tries not to lay out the details though, since that would put him at a severe disadvantage.
