Out With the Old [modplot]

Who| Everyone who signed up
What| The rescue of the NPC Legionnaires
Where| A movie studio in New New York
When| Takes place the same time as "Books of Magic"
Warnings/Notes| N/a

The studio where the Legionnaires are being held is swarming with supervillains. It's a trap, of course. But that doesn't mean they have to walk right into it. They have a plan, and now it's time to put it into action.

The Legion of Supervillains are expecting the non-native Legionnaires to be pushovers. They're about to discover just how crushingly, devastatingly wrong they are.

This is totally normal. It's nice to be back to basics again, and there's something reassuringly not subtle about this plan.

Okay, there are several unsubtle things in this situation, and most of them are named Reinhardt. Robbie is glad to be getting this moment to take one last deep breath and admire the utter balls that come with being a mace-wielding German dump truck. He will never be able to carry an 80s arena ballad with that panache.

It's enough to make the manic grin almost wistful as he jumps through the gaping hole in the roof, tucking into a ball on the way down. "Let's go, Legionnaires!"

He hits the ground at an angle that should probably break half his vertebrae, about a hundred rainbow colored balls of energy spring into existence, ricocheting everywhere, as he bounces off the floor and into the nearest still-standing villain. Another burst of Skittles globes as the momentum transfers and the guy goes flying. "So. Who hits the hardest?"

Yeah, he's reusing an old line. Who cares, it's a great line, and he is here to be annoy butts and mock names. Robbie doesn't wait around for volunteers - he launches himself towards the first person to even look at what Wash's doing.

"What did you do?" shrieks Saturn Queen, trying to take the headband off.

Her eyes widen in alarm as Cosmic King drops like a puppet with his strings cut, down to his knees.

"Lightning Lord, they cut me off! I can't control him now!" Saturn Queen practically shrieks.

Cosmic King looks out at the fight blearily, looks up at the pretty colored bubbles as if lost in his own head.

"Pretty," he says fuzzily. Then he looks and sees the captured Legionnaires, at the bloody and unconscious Brainy, and his eyes go wide with horror. "Brainy?"

Tears roll down his face.

"Nnno. No. No no no no."

His voice is high and frightened, like a child's, like he's a toddler having a tantrum. He stands, unsteady on his feet, sees the Legionnaires pouring into the room. To his blurred vision and twisted mind, all he sees are enemies. Enemies trying to get to the Legionnaires trapped in the center of the room. They're trapped. Trapped and in chains and he sees uniforms. The right uniforms are at his back. A black symbol of Saturn and short blonde hair - Imra. Lightning bolts, a familiar costume - Garth.

Friends. Friends are at his back and the rest...they're all strangers. The "L" insignias don't even register.

He holds up his hands and now that the Legionnaires are close, a glowing latticework of implanted technology is visible, threaded through the flesh of his palms and wrists, in a way that looks painful. He tries to find any metal he can use against them.

"Stay away! My friends. They're my friends."

There's a whoosh of air caused by flapping wings as Hiccup and Toothless dive in. Hiccup immediately scans the room for Cosmic King, and sees the Braalian's hands start to glow, and mentally curses.. If Dyrk's powers were tech based, that meant they might not have been cut off.

If they do still work, it doesn't matter. Any ferromagnetic material that is in Dyrk's immediate vicinity is suddenly held in place by Hiccup's metallokinesis. Before Dyrk can reach out further and possibly take control of Reinhardt and Wash's armor, the decidedly non-magnetic shield Hiccup flings at him knocks him out.

"He's probably going to have a headache in the morning. Who's next?" Hiccup quips, as Toothless lets out a challenging roar.

Reinhardt was making it a point to block out most of the chatter. Not because he didn't want to pay attention, but because he was fully dedicating himself to his role as the distraction. Underneath the helmet, the old man grinned, adrenaline already coursing through his veins as he swung his hammer at the amassed and confused villains.

But even with his boisterous singing, and his wide swings, there was purpose to his movements. He wasn't just swinging at random and hoping to hit any enemy he could. No, he was expertly knocking them away from the veteran Legionnaires, and making his way closer to Saturn Queen. Sure, his attitude did a good job of hiding his intent, but once he was within melee distance of Saturn Queen, Reinhardt dropped the facade. Fingers tightening around his hammer, smile replaced with a cold grimace, as he aimed a particularly nasty overhead swing down near her.

Not to hurt her, given he'd intentionally missed her, but to send a clear message.

"You attack one of us... you attack all of us!"

Between the hammer, the impromptu ball pit, the assorted screams, and the fucking dragon in the room, concentration isn't exactly easy. Despite that, Wash manages to pick the lock on the first set of cuffs, removing them from Kid Quantum. "Powers come back on in a minute forty-five, including yours," he says, voice loud enough to hear but low enough that only she can hear, and oh God it's only been fifteen seconds. Keep going. He has a mission. "Until then, get somewhere safe." He goes to work on the next set of cuffs, because right now that's what needs to be done. One down.

"Hey, Scream Queen! You'll have to forgive my friend! He's old. Total throwback! Children are the future. Chivalry isn't dead. You understand."

As he's saying this, Robbie is bouncing all around the telepath, off the floor, the ceiling, the set, whatever's sturdy and handy (possibly Reinhardt himself), and he's picking up speed. The impact bubbles don't get too out of control, replacing the older ones that paf out of existence.

He'll apologize later, if necessary, for sacrificing truth in the name of chatter.

"Me, I've got no problem hitting on a hottie." Almost simultaneously, the bouncing stops when he careens into her legs and stomach, sending the both to the floor in an absolute explosion of kinetic globules pattering down around them. "And that is how you make it, Rein!"

Now that Dyrk was down, Hiccup was free to deal with other issues. He focused his powers, and the chains around Brainiac 5 fell away.

"Brainy's loose. Someone get him back behind the shields," he commed, before tossing his shield at Mastermind.

"Got 'im," Cortana's voice comes over the comms.

Various featureless hard light constructs appear around Brainaic, smooth and white and uncomplicated, immobilizing his neck and spine and laying him on a hard light stretcher, a two-dimensional rectangle identifiable as a medical equipment only by the fact it's carrying a patient now. The process is fast, efficient, and eerie; Cortana is solving a physics problem with the absolute minimum number of steps, forces and degrees of freedom all accounted for. Brainiac would probably appreciate it, if he were in any condition to be doing so. Oh well, there's always the replay.

In seconds, Brainy and his minimalist medical gear are floating away from the fight and towards the audience, low to the ground and as quickly as Cortana dares move the severely injured man.

"Keep them busy enough it doesn't occur to anyone to take out the projectors, huh? Oh, and don't tell them that's what you're doing." Some of her teammates strike her as a bit excitable and prone to doing things like shout their plan across the room so all the hostiles can hear it.

On a landing in the crowd, next to a kit the Medbay staff had assembled on short notice and the Flash had been kind enough to carry in, Cortana's hologram appears, like it frequently does. The difference is that it's five times as tall as it's ever been before...and solid. In the moments before the stretcher arrives, a long time for an AI to fret, Cortana looks down at her hands, flexing the fingers experimentally. She knows she can do this, knows that her human neural patterns can use a body as reflexively as the human who donated them--and the human who donated hers is a superb surgeon.

Still.

Hell of a shakedown run.

The second Kid Q is free, instead of getting somewhere safe, she attacks one of the depowered no-name villains that start rushing in to help the Legion of Supervillain leaders, does a wrist block, and judo throws him into another villain.

Then she kicks another one in the head.

"'Get somewhere safe,'" she repeats. "Nonpowered combat practice isn't just something we assign to you rookies. Karate Kid's trained all of us for years. Legion standard practice."

Every Legionnaire they free can fight without their powers. That said, one of them was the best at fighting without powers.

"Still, free Karate Kid next."

Saturn Queen goes down.

Hiccup's shield deflects off of a shield around Mastermind -- clearly she's been poaching ideas from Brainiac 5. That said, her shield appears thinner and weaker. Other than her intelligence, she has no actualy powers. All of her abilities are rooted in her technology, which means they're immune to Wash's power.

"A blunt object. That's the best you can do? Primitive."

She pulls out a device and presses a button. The moment it activates, a strange concussive force blasts through the room, inducing temporary vertigo in any organics that don't have a device that counteracts it. It can be fought through, but it isn't pleasant.

Well hot damn, there's a reason Kid Q is in charge and fandom loves her. "Yes ma'am- fuck!"

He staggers as dizziness rolls over him. Must be a tech-based power, and right now Mastermind is standing with a shield and a device in her hands. For a moment he considers a shot, but stun ammo will be useless and there's no guarantee that live ammo will break her shield, and they can't afford a ricochet in this crowded space.

So he does the next best thing. "Reinhardt! Break her shield!" And her face, while he's at it, but that's implied. He moves to Karate Kid and takes a breath to steady himself. He's fought through more than one concussion. This fucking sucks, but he can handle it. Picking the lock just got a hell of a lot harder, though.

"--Nnngh!"

The wave of vertigo was unexpected, the giant wall of German muscle having to stop swinging for a moment. Setting his hammer down on the ground, and holding on to it, as he waits for the vertigo to pass. It helped steady him, even if it also succeeded in giving them some breathing room from Reinhardt's attacks.

But it didn't last very long.

"Oh, you want to see a blunt object?" Reinhardt spoke up to Mastermind with a smirk, forcing himself back to his feet. The engine on the back of his armor coming to life, as he maneuvered himself to face Mastermind.

//CHARGE >> READY

"LET ME SHOW YOU A BLUNT OBJECT!" And immediately after yelling that, he took off like a rocket. Precision German engineering charging its way through the battlefield, and impacting hard against Mastermind's shield.

Even knowing that she's possibly an alien didn't stop Robbie from checking the back of Saturn Queen's head for serious damage. It might not be wear she kept her brain, but he wanted to at least try and check. He hadn't expected to knock her out so easily and figured she'd hit her head.

It seemed normal? And just leaving the downed fighters free was a bad idea...

"Hrk!" Robbie came within inches of finding out what color plooberry vomit was. But he took a deep breath, and... it wasn't fine but he's used to the room spinning. He's normally more in control of it, but he managed to slowly drag Saturn Queen to the other villain and chain them together with what had been Kid Quantum's bonds.

Then, he ticked off a head count. "Scream Queen, Cosmo Kramer - "

There's the incredible smashing sounding to the side, and Robbie can just make out some green skin past the human Berlin Wall. "Brainless. Guys! I think we're missing one. Where's Lightbulb Lips?"

"Got it covered. Toothless, find him!"

Both Hiccup and Toothless are staggered by the suddenly induced case of vertigo, but Toothless's to track isn't negatively affected. His sense of smell and sense of hearing still work perfectly fine, and he uses them, closing his eyes and making a beeline for Lightning Lord.

The next thing the Winathian villain sees is a mass of scaly flesh rushing straight towards him to tackle him into a wall.

Usually when things are loud, chaotic, and everything's on fire? It's the way they've planned things to happen. There wasn't anywhere in the plan for fire and chaos and yelling at this point- and for the leadership to go quiet one after the other?

Unfortunate.

Bruteshot in hand The Meta jogs to the source of the noise, catching only the tail end of that rather impressive charge. Tech based, not something he can take. Even if they want it. A quick scan brings up a familiar (friendly) outline and signature-

Washington. But no sign of Epsilon. No sign of any AI or- anything other than Wash doing what Wash does best. Find trouble and ride it out. A moment's consideration is given before he slings his weapon on his back and braces himself- simply walking out as casually as possible. They remember enough fragments of who and what they used to be to hold the ruse until they can best assess the situation.

Despite himself, Reinhardt couldn't help but smirk as Mastermind slammed her head against her own shield. The old man practically radiating confidence, as he straightened from his charging stance, and scoffed at the passed-out leaders.

"I believe there is a saying from when I was a child that applies right now," Reinhardt spoke up, his smirk practically audible. Not even paying attention to the rest of the fighting as he slung his hammer over his shoulder, getting one last jab in.

"Get good, scrubs."

The vertigo passes quickly enough, and Wash manages to successfully remove the cuffs from Karate Kid. He looks up in time to see Mastermind ricochet off her own shield and doesn't bother to stop a vicious grin from spreading across his face. His helmet will hide it anyway, and dammit, he deserves the half a second to revel in something going right for a change. "Reinhardt, when this is over, I owe you a beer."

That's when his HUD marks another set of armor in his peripherals. He's been through a few sets of armor himself - enough that he's lost a lot of saved data, including old markers - but that silhouette is unmistakable.

But timeline shenanigans are a known issue here, and this could either be very good or very bad. For a moment, Wash freezes. He doesn't know-

And he can't help but hope.

He straightens up, voice just barely loud enough to be heard when he speaks. "Maine?"
